3. J.C. Penney will shut 40 stores, cut 2,250 jobs
J.C. Penney Co. said it will close about 40 stores this year and cut approximately 2,250 jobs as it tries to improve its profitability. Most of the stores, located in malls around the country, will close by April 4. The Plano, Texas, company currently runs about 1,060 stores. The chain is closing two stores in Massachusetts — at Silver City Galleria in Taunton and the Hanover Mall — plus its store at the Providence Place mall.

4. Macy’s plans to close down 14 stores, lay off 2,200 people
CINCINNATI — Macy’s Inc. plans to restructure its merchandising and marketing and lay off of thousands of workers in response to changes in the way customers shop, in stores and online. The retailer said Thursday that it will also close 14 department stores but open two at new locations, resulting in annual savings of roughly $140 million. Macy’s plans to reinvest those savings into its business. None of the stores to be closed are in New England. Macy’s said the job reductions will average two to three positions per store. Its overall workforce of about 175,000 will remain level, the company said.
The price on this is how much? It grew but is reduced?
Those two articles are the result of the woeful Christmas shopping season that no one is talking about. These very pages warned of such things. Looks like J.C. Penney and Macy's didn't waste any time.
