Larry was right:

"The three-term sheriff took hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gifts, and illegal loans for himself, his mistress, and a close group of friends in exchange for political favors, get-out-jail-free cards, and the power of his office"

"'America's sheriff' corruption trial opens in California" by Gillian Flaccus, Associated Press | October 30, 2008

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Former Orange County sheriff Michael Carona was a sharp, inspiring leader consumed by greed, a prosecutor said yesterday as the federal corruption trial began for the lawman nicknamed "America's sheriff."

The three-term sheriff took hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gifts, and illegal loans for himself, his mistress, and a close group of friends in exchange for political favors, get-out-jail-free cards, and the power of his office, Assistant US Attorney Brett Sagel told jurors.

The square-jawed Carona, dubbed "America's sheriff" by CNN's Larry King after vowing to hunt down a child abductor, sat stoically through the prosecutor's opening statement.

In court papers, the government accused Carona, who has since stepped down, and his friends of accepting nearly $700,000 in cash, gifts, kickbacks, and questionable loans in exchange for political favors beginning in 1998. Among other items, Carona and friends received a boat, travel expenses, watches, ringside boxing seats, and tickets to the World Series playoffs.

Carona was a relatively obscure county marshal when his tough-on-crime, Christian family values message helped get him elected in 1998 to serve the coastal county of 3 million people between Los Angeles and San Diego. He emerged in the national spotlight six years ago when he looked into national television cameras and told the abductor of a 5-year-old girl not to eat and not to sleep, because his deputies were right behind him.

I am SICK of these FUCKING HYPOCRITES!!!

The abductor was quickly caught, and the way Carona handled the case earned him the praise of King and others who considered him a rising star in the Republican Party. --more--"

A shooting star, readers.
