"US loses track of arms for Afghan army" by Baltimore Sun | February 13, 2009
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has lost track of 87,000 weapons handed out without proper accounting to Afghan army and police units, federal investigators reported yesterday.
The weapons included rifles, pistols, machine guns, grenade launchers, shotguns, mortars, and other weapons, according to the Government Accountability Office. The GAO is the investigation arm of Congress.
The weapons are among about 240,000 small arms and other sensitive items, including 2,410 prized night-vision devices, that were given to Afghan security forces trained by the US military. The shipments included about 79,000 AK-47 assault rifles, the standard weapon used by the Taliban and other insurgents.
The US command also failed to keep serial numbers or other records on about 135,000 weapons donated by allies and handed over to Afghan security forces, the GAO said. "Given the unstable security conditions in Afghanistan, the risk of loss and theft of these weapons is significant," the GAO reported.
And yet YOU have to REGISTER all YOUR GUNS HERE, AmeriKan!!!!
The US effort to train and equip Afghan security forces so far has cost $16.5 billion.
Is that money you really had to waste over a damnable lie, America?
Senior US officials have called the government of Afghanistan highly corrupt, and intelligence officials say its security forces have been infiltrated by Taliban and insurgent sympathizers.
Really? See: Where Did All the War Loot Go?
Night-vision devices are eagerly sought by insurgents to neutralize the night-fighting advantage of US forces.
No wonder we are getting our asses kicked.
