The only uncertainty about all this was how bad the Iraqis would suffer, and it was worse than anyone -- even those like me who protested against it before it started -- could have imagined.
The vice president said Iraqis will have to take responsibility to keep the gains that have been made. "You have given the Iraqis for the first time in their memory the opportunity to live in peace, but it's up to them to keep it."

BAGHDAD - A bomb left in a plastic bag exploded yesterday near Baghdad's most important Shi'ite shrine, killing seven people and wounding 23, police said.

Yesterday's attack was part of a wave of violence that hit Iraq this week, primarily in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad. The uptick coincided with a five-hour visit Tuesday by President Obama, who told US troops that "there is still a lot of work to do" in Iraq despite the new focus on the war in Afghanistan.

The bomb exploded in a pedestrian shopping area in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Kazimiyah, about 100 yards from the tomb of Imam Mousa al-Kazim - one of the 12 Shi'ite saints....

No group has claimed responsibility for the recent blasts, but the US military blames Al Qaeda in Iraq, a Sunni extremist group that has targeted Shi'ite civilians in the past. The government has blamed supporters of Saddam Hussein in league with Al Qaeda and suggested the blasts were timed for this week's anniversary of the founding of his disbanded Ba'ath party. Today is also the sixth anniversary of the US capture of Baghdad, which ended Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime....
Whoever is responsible, the attacks have undermined public confidence in the Iraqi security services as the US military prepares to draw down its forces in the cities by the end of June.

MOSUL, Iraq - A suicide truck bomber attacked a police headquarters yesterday in the tense northern city of Mosul, killing five US soldiers in the deadliest strike against American forces in Iraq in 13 months.
The bomber evaded several concrete barriers and detonated his truck loaded with explosives at the entrance to the local headquarters of Iraq's national police.

Also yesterday, a Sunni politician who had run an unsuccessful bid for local government in January was assassinated on the street. The explosion at the compound sent glass flying, destroyed five armored vehicles and charred two other US vehicles, Iraqi security sources said.
Many of the wounded Iraqis were civilians who lived in neighboring houses. Security forces sealed off the area, and helicopters roared overhead while smoke filled the sky. Two people were arrested after the bombing, according to US military and Iraqi security officials....
The latest bombing raised to 4,271 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since 2003. But the numbers have dropped dramatically in the relative calm that followed a buildup of troops in 2007....
