Boat Builders Bottom Out

"the clientele is not living from paycheck to paycheck.... sales are beginning to increase and "many people feel we've found the bottom"

I'm tired of the Globe's elitism. Can you tell?

"Rough waters; Maine's boat builders feel pinch as demand for craftsmanship declines" by Brian MacQuarrie, Globe Staff | May 10, 2009

ROCKLAND, Maine - In the midst of a devastating recession, Maine's boat builders have found themselves battered by badly crippled demand for their world-famous craftsmanship.

The sister companies of Back Cove and Sabre yachts have shed 100 workers in the last year. Hinckley, a big name in the industry, has had three rounds of layoffs since October and lost 100 employees - one-fifth of its workforce.

You own a yacht, reader?

Btw, Globe, WE LOST TENS of THOUSANDS of JOBS in MARCH ALONE!!!

You see what I mean about their shit coverage?

And at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, a wary management is diversifying its products to include solar-powered generators. "It's been a scary time," said J.B. Turner, president of Lyman-Morse. "Who knows what's going to happen in the future?"

The hopeful consensus is that the future will replicate the past and that the current drought of orders will rebound when the economy does. But in a state where boat building is synonymous with identity, the hammer that has fallen on Maine's 85 boat builders is having a psychological effect as well as an economic one.

"It's been a shock," Turner said. "Like a guillotine, it's just sliced through everybody."

You mean, like this?

The clientele is not living from paycheck to paycheck. But the global economy has created a tidal surge of uncertainty - and a sudden taste for inconspicuous consumption.... sales are beginning to increase and "many people feel we've found the bottom."

But as a hedge against the cyclical fortunes of the business, Lyman-Morse is expanding into alternative energy. In addition to solar generators, company managers are considering whether to manufacture blades for wind turbines....

Yup, go after GOVERNMENT LOOT now!!!
