And here is something else to consider: if you control the food supply, you control people. The fewer people that actually grow their own food and look to government.... well, what wouldn't you do for some food?
Think about it.
"Food pantries examine options; 1 planned closure sparks volunteers' concern in Salem" by Stephanie Ebbert, Globe Staff | May 8, 2009
SALEM - When the Salem Mission recently decided to shut down its food pantry, concern rippled through the community: In the depths of a recession, the pantry had been serving 1,600 families a month.
Salem Mission is closing its food pantry with plans to convert the space to a medical clinic, having decided that it should focus on helping homeless individuals, rather than the families who use soup kitchens and are served elsewhere. Food pantries and soup kitchens are seeing far more families in need than in years past. Many newcomers are people who lost jobs and need extra food to get by....
But we aren't in a depression or anything.
In fact, we are coming out of the recession they never told you about.
Yesterday, Ozzy Cancela made his second-ever trip to a food pantry. The 44-year-old chef, who lost his job, showed his driver's license at St. Joseph's to accept several bags stuffed with spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, meat, and yogurt for his wife and three children.
"It's kind of embarrassing, but due to the situation, I just kick the embarrassment to the side and say, 'I've got to put some food on my kids' table,' " Cancela said.--more--"
Did you try the U.N.?
"Every table was set with a single fresh rose (from the rose gardens outside, I was told) and a full complement of three forks, two knives, and two spoons in silver plate..... The buffet tables could have graced a high-end ocean liner. I watched a gentleman in colorful African garb pile his plate with slices of roast sirloin and potatoes mashed with feta cheese. A post-retirement-age couple from the East Side scarfed up most of the egg rolls, though more came out quickly....
I made for the roast leg of lamb with rosemary sauce after I filled my salad plate with chilled asparagus and slices of a duck and pork terrine.... fresh tomato soup and bowls of pasta primavera.... The dessert buffet table practically groaned under a spread of apple and pumpkin pies, cheesecakes, tarts, half a dozen cheeses, sliced fruits, bowls of berries, and, off to one side, three urns of ice cream"
