"Zoo chief defends stance on closings; Says options to save facilities slim" by Matt Viser, Globe Staff | July 15, 2009
John Linehan, president and chief executive of Zoo New England, last night defended his organization’s recent public statements, adamantly arguing that the two zoos in Greater Boston would be shut down if funding is not restored by the Legislature:
“I’m sure the budget is very difficult to manage. I think the world of the governor. He’s got a tough job in a very tough time. All I can say is we meant what we said in the original letter to the Legislature. We certainly went into this not wanting it to be a big public debate the way it’s become. We were just trying to provide the facts to the Legislature when we came across this veto. We wanted to work behind the scenes and get it done quietly. I certainly didn’t expect it to be such a loud discussion.’’
Yeah, thanks for FRONT-PAGING the issue for FOUR DAYS, Globe!!!
And WTF does this governor have on everyone?
Linehan said no one in the Patrick administration asked them what the consequences of such a cut would be, forcing them to take their case to lawmakers once they found out about his veto:
“I must admit, it certainly has gotten out of hand. And I certainly didn’t want it to become such a public issue. When this happens, it hurts us.’’
