The Rev. Charles Richard Stith traveled across Africa, discussing with current and former heads of state the role of the new US administration in the world’s poorest continent, just days before the first African-American president flew to the land that his father called home.

Stith, 59, a former ambassador to the East African nation of Tanzania, was in a familiar role, encouraging African leaders to boost the fortunes of more than 800 million people living there, promoting US investments in the continent, and stressing that America is a well-meaning development partner of a region that is becoming increasingly important to the nation’s security and economic interests.

Stith sees unique opportunities for Africa with Obama in the White House, saying he expects African leaders to be held more accountable for their actions and world leaders to be more sensitive when discussing the continent with a man whose grandmother still lives in a remote village in Western Kenya.
“By virtue of who he is, the issue will be dealt with, definitely, more respect and, hopefully, more seriously,’’ said Stith, now the director of the African Presidential Archives and Research Center at Boston University.
Africa may have problems with poverty, disease, and internal strife, but it is critical as the second-largest source of oil for the United States. Stability in Africa also serves US security interests since Al Qaeda operatives often seek refuge in failed states like Somalia, Stith said.

Stith is keenly aware of Al Qaeda’s menace - he took charge at the US embassy in Tanzania one month after a near simultaneous attack destroyed the mission there and in neighboring Kenya. He went on to become one of the most popular American diplomats in the country, often traveling upcountry and setting up shop for several days as he tried to dispel the perception of America as a distant superpower that restricts contact to official circles....
