NICOSIA, Cyprus - Pro-Palestinian activists vowed yesterday to continue to defy an Israeli Navy blockade around Gaza, a day after Israel seized their boat and detained 21 people bringing aid to the territory.

Israel boarded a small ferry carrying activists to Gaza on Tuesday, intercepting the vessel in Gaza’s Israeli-controlled coastal waters. Those detained included an Irish peace laureate, a former member of the US Congress, and charity workers from Bahrain.
The activists, called the Free Gaza Movement, first started sending aid directly into Gaza in August 2008, but had been intercepted by the Israeli Navy on two previous occasions.
The group would continue regardless of interceptions, said spokeswoman Greta Berlin.
“We are definitely going to go even if we have to paddle across,’’ she told journalists in Cyprus.
The activists had set off from Cyprus with humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, a territory ruled by Hamas Islamists. Israel tightened controls over Gaza, a sliver of territory of 1.5 million people, after Hamas took control there in 2007.

International calls for an end to the blockade have mounted after a 22-day Israeli offensive last December and January deepened hardship in the territory. Israel launched the military operation with the declared aim of ending crossborder rocket attacks.
The whole sanitizing of what happened there, and the implication once again that Israel is somehow always responding to some threats get tiresome to read. This is WHY AmeriKa's jewspapers are failing.
Activists said they would continue to try to get aid directly to Gaza as long as Israeli restrictions are in place. Israel said it is allowing aid to get through. The International Committee of the Red Cross said this week that stringent restrictions imposed by Israel are crippling reconstruction efforts.
Translation: We have a WAR CRIME on our hands here -- and that is BEFORE the WMD USE by Israel (another unmentioned aspect by the Zionist MSM).

Meanwhile, the blockade of Gaza is causing severe humanitarian hardship and the situation is getting worse every day, the head of the UN aid agency for Palestinian refugees warned yesterday. Egypt opens the crossing periodically. Israel allows in food and humanitarian aid, but does not permit raw materials that the Gaza Strip needs to repair damage from Israel’s winter war on Hamas, meant to stop militant rocket fire on Israeli towns.

PARIS - Amnesty International accused both Israel and the militant Hamas movement that controls Gaza yesterday of committing war crimes during the three weeks of fighting there earlier this year.
The human rights group’s 117-page report singled out what it called the “unprecedented’’ scale and intensity of the Israeli onslaught and the “unlawful’’ Palestinian use of rockets against Israeli civilians. Both Hamas and Israel rejected the report as unbalanced.
The Israeli military suggested that the “slant’’ of the report “indicates that the organization succumbed to the manipulations’’ of Hamas. Moreover, it said in a statement, the report ignored Israeli efforts to minimize civilian casualties.

The statement also said Israel’s investigations into the behavior of its forces during the war in late December and January proved that its military “operated throughout the fighting in accordance with international law, maintaining high ethical and professional standards.’’

The Amnesty International report was the second this week by an international human rights organization calling into question Israeli military practices in the Gaza war. A report released Tuesday by Human Rights Watch said 29 civilians were killed in what appeared to be six missile strikes by Israeli drones.

The group questioned whether Israeli forces had taken “all feasible precautions’’ to avoid civilian casualties. Israel’s military has never acknowledged using the remotely piloted planes to fire missiles.
Amnesty International, which is based in London, released its report yesterday explicitly rejecting Israeli claims that Hamas used civilians as human shields but said that in several cases Israeli soldiers used Palestinian civilians, including children, as “human shields, endangering their lives by forcing them to remain in or near houses which they took over and used as military positions.’’

An aid ship captured by the armed forces of another country in International waters is an act of piracy…I think. At least it was when Soma li pirates captured an American ship recently. It appears that the U.S. Mainstream media is going to ignore this story even though Cynthia McKinney was once a Congresswoman from Georgia and a Presidential candidate. How odd. What does this say about the news we receive daily from the mainstream media. The New York Times Boasts “All the News that’s fit to Print”. Apparently this act of piracy and cowardly behavior isn’t fit to print. I condemn the New York Times for failing to print this news that they are fully aware of. It isn’t just the NY Times that has chosen this path, almost all of the mainstream media has refused to broadcast this latest malfeasance of the government in Israel. It seems like anyone that gets their news from this censored mainstream media will never know about the heavy-handed way Israel treats those that try to stop the suffering in Gaza. Rep. JERUSALEM — Nineteen foreign activists of the pro-Palestinian Free Gaza Movement were being held in Israel awaiting deportation on Thursday, two days after the Israeli Navy seized control of their boat off Gaza.
A former United States Representative, Cynthia McKinney, and an Irish peace activist and Nobel laureate, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, were among those being held. Two additional Israeli activists were released without being charged on Wednesday, according to the group.
The Free Gaza Movement and other campaigners have sailed several boats to Gaza in the last year, saying they wanted to bring humanitarian aid and challenging the Israeli blockade. Israel has let some boats reach the coastal strip and forced others to turn back at sea
This time, the Israeli navy commandeered the boat and brought the crew and passengers ashore in Ashdod. The military said in a statement that the navy had previously contacted the boat at sea and warned that it would not be permitted to enter Gaza coastal waters “because of security risks in the area and the existing naval blockade.”
Richard Falk, the United Nations special rapporteur for human rights in the Palestinian territories, said in a statement from Geneva on Thursday that the seizure of the boat was unlawful and that the Israeli blockade of Gaza constituted a “continuing crime against humanity.”
The boat left Cyprus on Monday and was seized on Tuesday. The activists said they had a cargo of medical and reconstruction supplies and children’s toys.
The Israeli military said the aid would be transferred to Gaza subject to security authorization.
Ramzi Kysia, an activist with the Free Gaza Movement, said the 19 people being detained were likely to be deported by Friday, once deportation procedures were complete. But he said some might refuse deportation unless all of those being detained were released together and all the equipment of journalists with the group was returned.
Speaking by telephone from Cyprus, Mr. Kysia said that five of the detainees were Bahraini citizens and that they were being held apart from the others in a cramped facility.
In a report issued earlier this week, the International Committee of the Red Cross criticized the Israeli-imposed embargo, saying that Gaza’s 1.5 million residents were “trapped in despair.”
The Israeli government has said it is reviewing the embargo policy, but it has not yet made any decisions.
Also Thursday, Palestinian reports said that a girl, 17, had been killed by a shell from an Israeli tank in central Gaza and that several others had been wounded. The Israeli military said an army patrol had come under fire along the border in the evening and fired mortars in response. Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity under army rules, said initial investigations indicated that Palestinian militants had also fired mortars during the clash and that the Palestinian casualties had probably been caused by Palestinian fire.
