Blame it on Rio

Okay, I will.

"Rio’s 7-year-old carnival drum corps queen didn’t like it one bit when the cameras homed in on her as she led a lavish samba parade, and reacted as any child might - by having a good cry. But the sprite of a samba dancer did her best to brush away the tears"

That's not healthy or good for a kid!

"Rio de Janeiro reins in Carnival" by Bradley Brooks, Associated Press | February 13, 2010

RIO DE JANEIRO - The World’s Greatest Party opened yesterday, but the everything-goes atmosphere of Carnival that turns Rio into a giant oceanside den of debauchery is under assault....

The AmeriKan MSM never says that about our revelry.

In fact, they just hyped the Stupor, I mean Super Bowl.

Those who drink too much beer at giant street parties and want to use gutters as toilets - tolerated in the past - are out of luck....

Sounds like a college-town bar scene anywhere in AmeriKa on any weekend.

And something else is missing: Rio’s world-famous waterfront pickup club for legal prostitutes has closed to make way for a museum.

Man, they really wanted to take the fun out of the party, huh?

The changes were getting mixed reviews even before the party officially started.

“The plan is doing the impossible: making Rio square,’’ said Marcus Paulo Reis, a 36-year-old businessman sipping beer at lunch this week in the beachside Arpoador neighborhood. “They’re trying to get rid of the grit that gives Rio its flavor.’’

Would that be what is floating in the gutter?

Violence is still the city’s biggest security concern, with at least seven suspected drug traffickers and a policeman killed Thursday in a shoot-out in a slum in northern Rio.

Brazil has a drug war, too, MSM? No kidding?

I thought that was only up here in parts north and Colombia, Peru, etc.

There appears to be a silent majority glad to get some peace on the beach and during this week’s party as international headliners poured into Rio, including Madonna, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and Paris Hilton....

The party was just ruined -- although I wouldn't mind talking to Ms. Hilton.

Amid the law-and-order makeover, a 7-year-old girl was preparing to samba before a crowd of thousands as a Carnival drum corps queen, a coveted role normally reserved for sultry models. A family court judge overruled objections that it is inappropriate for little Julia Lira to be in such a traditionally sexualized role.

WTF?

Emulating what New York City’s government did in the 1990s, Mayor Eduardo Paes wants to end Rio’s general lawlessness with a zero-tolerance campaign he calls “shock of order.’’

The headlines have come nonstop for a year: Shock of order on the beaches. Shock of order on public transportation. Shock of order on illegal billboards.

As he handed over the key to the city to the Carnival King Momo - who rules the city until Ash Wednesday - Paes made it clear who really was in charge. He stood before journalists holding a sign underscoring his anti-urine campaign that said, “Come on, don’t pee here, OK?’’

Rio isn’t the only city cracking down on Carnival.

In the colonial town of Olinda in northeastern Brazil, anyone playing loud music in his or her house will face a fine of $3,800. Officials say they want nothing interfering with the music in the streets.

Screw this party!

The mayor of Sao Lourenco, a city north of Rio, has banned Brazilian rap and funk music in street parties - saying the styles promote violence and vulgarity. Offenders face as long as six months in jail.

The crackdown has left a bad taste in the mouths of some Cariocas, as Rio residents call themselves, especially those who make their living on the beach - the destination for as many as 2 million people on a hot summer day.

Looks like they are only getting half that, readers.

"1 million expected at Carnival party

RIO DE JANEIRO - Organizers expected up to 1 million people to turn out yesterday for the Bola Preta street party, or “bloco,’’ Carnival’s biggest bash. Dressed in black and white, the revelers sang along to traditional Carnival songs.

It sure does sound like fun -- except for one little girl:

"Spotlight shines on young carnival queen" by Associated Press | February 16, 2010

My goodness, what a little DARLING!!!!

Let us hope the LITTLE GIRL GROWS UP and lives a GOOD LIFE, huh?!!!

RIO DE JANEIRO - Julia Lira, Rio’s 7-year-old carnival drum corps queen, didn’t like it one bit when the cameras homed in on her as she led a lavish samba parade, and reacted as any child might - by having a good cry.

But the sprite of a samba dancer did her best to brush away the tears, and after a few minutes of holding her mother’s hand and resting in the arms of a doting official from her Viradouro samba group, she returned in front of the crowd to dance early yesterday.

The samba parades - which pit 12 top-tier groups against one another in a competition that is closely watched by millions throughout the country - began Sunday evening and didn’t stop until the sun rose yesterday after six groups paraded.

Yesterday evening, the final six went before the cheering crowds of 80,000 in a specially designed stadium.

Putting Julia in the carnival role drew the ire of child welfare advocates who were against a young girl taking on a role normally reserved for sultry models and actresses. But a judge ruled last week that she could join the parade. Julia wore a sequined halter top and a miniskirt made of purple feathers.

Some in the audience also thought she was not ready for the spotlight. “A girl that size shouldn’t be thrust in such a role,’’ said Marister Deniz, 60, who was watching from the stands.

What, the TEARS give it away?
