Who Cares About Mubarak's Wife?

The Boston Globe does, very much.

"Mubarak’s wife under detention in hospital" May 14, 2011|Associated Press

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak, was in intensive care yesterday after suffering severe chest pains upon hearing the news that she had been ordered detained on corruption allegations.

The 70-year-old former first lady has a heart problem and is in unstable condition at a hospital in this Red Sea community, where her husband is also being treated, the hospital director said.

The detention order came a day after Suzanne Mubarak was questioned for the first time since she was accused of taking advantage of her husband’s position to enrich herself....

How can people without a heart have a problem?

"Wife of Mubarak in stable condition

SHARM EL-SHEIKH — Egypt’s former first lady, Suzanne Mubarak, was in stable condition after treatment for a panic attack and has effectively been put under arrest pending further investigation of corruption allegations, officials said. She fainted and suffered chest pains after a three-hour interrogation Friday that ended with a decision to detain her 15 days."

Gotta be more going on in Egypt than one woman's story.

"Christian protesters disregarded a call by their faith’s top Egyptian leader to end a weeklong sit-in in front of a government building on the Nile, remaining in place yesterday, a day after a mob attacked them and their supporters, injuring 78.

The sit-in aimed to draw attention to the plight of Christians, who have been the target of several attacks by Muslim fundamentalists in the weeks since President Hosni Mubarak was forced from office.

The head of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Shenouda III, said in a statement that outsiders have infiltrated the sit-in of largely Christian demonstrators, making the situation even more explosive.

Yes, THAT is what I had suspected all along since Christians and Muslims came together in protest.

He warned that Egypt’s military rulers and interim civilian government were losing patience with the protesters.

"The wife of deposed President Hosni Mubarak has turned over her property and funds to the state, the Egyptian state news agency said yesterday. Mubarak and his wife, Suzanne, have been questioned about their financial dealings. Some estimates put Mubarak’s holdings in the tens of billions of dollars.

Suzanne Mubarak, 70, has been hospitalized after an order to detain her. Mubarak, 83, who was deposed Feb. 11, is also in the hospital. Turning over domestic assets worth $3 million could lead to an agreement to drop the investigation. A government official said the case against her has not been closed.

Also yesterday, Egyptian riot police fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters outside the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. At least 185 demonstrators were arrested over allegations of attacking police and vandalism. The rally in Cairo follows marches on Israel in support of the Palestinians.

"Mubarak’s wife yields $4m in Egypt assets; No wrongdoing admitted in deal for her release" May 18, 2011|By David D. Kirkpatrick, New York Times

CAIRO — Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of Egypt’s ousted president, Hosni Mubarak, has agreed to turn over about $4 million worth of assets to the government in exchange for her release from detention without bail, her lawyer and Interior Ministry officials said yesterday.

Farid el-Deeb, a high-profile defense lawyer representing the Mubarak family, said Suzanne Mubarak had not admitted any wrongdoing but nevertheless acknowledged that certain assets that appeared to belong to her were in fact public property, including charitable funds in her bank accounts and a presidential mansion....

I believe the proper term is looting.

Suzanne Mubarak was detained Friday and held at a hospital near the Mubaraks’ home in Sharm el-Sheik. She had reportedly complained of chest pains after suffering a panic attack at her detention.

Hosni Mubarak is being held at the same hospital after suffering a heart attack during his interrogation.

What is really fascinating is I have seen nothing in the Boston Globe about the recent "suicide" by a Gitmo detainee.

"No amnesty for Mubarak, Egypt says" May 19, 2011|Associated Press

CAIRO — Egypt’s military rulers denied local media reports they plan to grant amnesty to deposed president Hosni Mubarak following a wave of popular criticism and calls for new protests.

The denial, issued late Tuesday, followed unconfirmed reports that Mubarak would be pardoned in return for an apology to the nation for any wrongdoing and would also hand over his assets. The reports claimed the ousted leader would release an audio recording appealing for amnesty....

The media reports sparked a wave of criticism and prompted calls for a “Friday to reject the apology’’ rally in Tahrir Square. Several youth groups warned that granting amnesty to Mubarak would spark a new revolution in Egypt.

I'm starting to think they need another one because this military government is still part of the corrupt criminal power structure.

Calls also spread on Facebook and Twitter for rallies on May 27 under the banner, “I have not felt the change, I am going back to Tahrir,’’ referring to the central Cairo square that was the center of the protests that brought down Mubarak. They reflected disappointment with the way the military council, which took over from Mubarak, is running the country....

See: More of the Same in Egypt

Mubarak’s 70-year-old wife, Suzanne, was released on Tuesday after she relinquished assets and property valued at some $4 million. The move aimed to settle corruption allegations against her, but it was unclear whether she still faces trial.

Mrs. Mubarak was hospitalized over the weekend after she fainted and complained of chest pains during interrogation.

All that Egyptian repression and torture unreported all these years, and now.... sigh.
