Slow Saturday Special: Pervert Lurking Around Arlington

"Dorchester man accused of assaulting middle school girl" by John R. Ellement |  Globe staff, December 06, 2013

A Dorchester man is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old Arlington girl after communicating with her while she was in a school computer class and then luring her outside, police said.

The girl is a student at Ottoson Middle School, said Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan. He said the girl first began talking with the suspect in an Internet chatroom about 24 hours before the alleged assault took place Wednesday.

Jose Alexis Rodriguez-Laboy, 35, was charged Friday in Cambridge District Court with indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 and enticement of a child. He was held on $100,000 bail on the assault-and-battery charge, and $1,000 on the enticement charge.

If he posts bail, Rodriguez-Laboy will have to use a GPS monitoring device while under house arrest, stay away from the victim, and have no one under 16 years old in his home except for his children, among other conditions. His next court date is Dec. 19 for a pretrial conference.

Police say Rodriguez-Laboy drove to the middle school Wednesday and, using his handheld device, persuaded the girl to walk out of computer class around noon.

“He was using his handheld to communicate with the student while she was in the computer lab in the school building,’’ Ryan said. “She walked out and met him in the parking lot.’’

Why are kids so stupid these days?

At that point, Rodriguez-Laboy drove to another location where he allegedly assaulted her, Ryan said.

Police were called to the Ottoson after a teacher noticed the girl was not in school. While officers were starting a missing student investigation, the girl returned to the school, where she was interviewed by police.

Based on their conversation with the girl, police began an investigation that led them to the suspect, Ryan said.

Ryan said the investigation into the interaction between the girl and Rodriguez-Laboy is ongoing. He also said police are trying to determine whether the man had contact with other teenagers by using the same tactic of meeting a person in a chatroom.

“It looks like he was lurking in the chatroom,’’ Ryan said.

Good reason not to allow conversation of any kind.
