The then-principal at Needham High School was investigated for allegedly having “unwanted sexual contact’’ with an adult employee in the district, and his suspension by the district in April was warranted, the Needham school system’s superintendent, Daniel Gutekanst, stated on Friday.

Jonathan Pizzi was hired to lead the town’s high school in 2009. He was placed on administrative leave on April 29 after school officials were notified of allegations that he had engaged in “unwanted sexual contact’’ with the employee, Gutekanst wrote in an e-mail sent to Needham families.

“Dr. Pizzi declined opportunities to be interviewed as part of the district’s formal investigation into the alleged behavior,’’ Gutekanst wrote in the e-mail sent through the school system. “The school district worked closely with legal counsel and appropriate town officials and authorities during the investigation.’’

Pizzi resigned from the position on May 2.
