A father in his 20s was found brutally slain inside his Roslindale apartment on Monday morning, police and neighbors said.

Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans told reporters outside the brick apartment complex on Brookway Road that officers found the victim inside the building at about 10:20 a.m. He had suffered “significant head trauma” and was pronounced dead at the scene, Evans said.

Evans did not discuss a possible motive for the attack or potential suspects. No arrests were reported on Monday, and Evans said police removed several animals from the man’s apartment after the gruesome discovery....

Detectives remained on the scene into the late afternoon, and the entrance to the man’s building was sealed off with police tape. Many residents looked on from the street, including several children.

“It’s crazy,” said one man, who would only give his first name, Rick. “Especially with all these kids out here like this.” He said he “sort of” knew the victim and would see him in passing. “As far as I know, he didn’t have any problems with anyone,” he said.

Another resident, Joanna Peguero, 33, counted the victim as a friend and said he was “very friendly,” and that he had children. Other neighbors said he was a father of three. Peguero said she knew the victim as Jason, but he also had several nicknames, including Rico.

The slaying was the 16th homicide in the city this year, compared with 31 at this time in 2014, police said....
