DETROIT — An unarmed black man who was fatally shot by suburban Detroit police this week suffered from mental illness and wasn’t a threat to officers, his mother said Thursday.
Valerie Johnson told The Associated Press that her son, 35-year-old Kevin Matthews, had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. She said she and her family question police claims that he was involved in a theft that led to Wednesday’s foot chase and shooting.
Detroit police haven’t identified the man who was shot by an officer from nearby Dearborn, but said the man was being sought on a misdemeanor warrant. Police said the man was shot after struggling with the officer in the backyard of a Detroit home near Dearborn city limits.
Johnson, 57, said the man was her son.
‘‘It’s kind of rough on me. I miss my baby,’’ she said in a phone interview from a Detroit church where she was receiving grief counseling. ‘‘He was shot for nothing. He was a good guy. He was a good son, not a bad person.’’
Detroit Chief James Craig has said the officer suffered minor injuries and that his uniform was ripped. Messages seeking comment about the case Thursday from Detroit and Dearborn police weren’t immediately returned.
A police watchdog group in Detroit called for the suspension of the Dearborn officer involved in Matthews’ death.
‘‘For the sake of Kevin’s family, and for the peace and safety of our community, we believe suspension of the officer is necessary until the facts are known,’’ Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality spokesman Ken Reed said Thursday.
Police departments nationwide have come under fire, with some facing protests, following officer-involved shootings of black men.
More than 100 protesters temporarily shut down a terminal at Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport on Wednesday to draw attention to last month’s death of Jamar Clark, who was shot by Minneapolis police responding to an assault complaint.
And they got it.
In Chicago, persistent protests — including one Thursday — were sparked by the release of police dashcam video showing a white officer shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was holding a knife but appeared to be walking away from officers, 16 times in October 2014.
And now the teachers are going on strike.

CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday accidentally shot and killed a 55-year-old woman, who was among two people fatally wounded, police said Saturday.

Relatives said Bettie Jones lived downstairs from Quintonio LeGrier, the 19-year-old subject of the initial call to police who also was killed by the officer.
Not an "accident?"
I suppose it is an accident that this version is a rewritten from what I'm reading in print.
I'm going to do my best to give you the gist of print, readers. I don't have time to go search and compare today. Just makes you wonder what the pre$$ is covering up.
Officers who responded to the call “were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon,” the Chicago Police Department said in a statement.
Like I have always said, if the American security services murder you it is your own fault.
“The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed,” reads the statement, which extends “deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”
LeGrier’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times he had invited his son to a family holiday gathering before the shooting but he chose not to go. Antonio LeGrier said when he returned to his second-floor apartment early Saturday, Quintonio appeared to be a “little agitated.”
He said he heard loud banging on his locked bedroom door around 4:15 a.m. and that his son said, “You’re not going to scare me.” He said Quintonio tried to bust the door open, but he kept him from doing so and called police.
The father said he called Jones, who lived a floor below, and warned her his son was a “little irate” and not to open the door unless police arrived.
When police arrived, Antonio LeGrier said he heard Jones yell, “Whoa, whoa, whoa!” He said he heard gunshots as he made his way down from the second floor and then saw his son and Jones lying in the foyer.
“I identified myself as the father and I held my hands out,” he said.
He said his son had emotional problems after spending most of his childhood in foster care but said it didn’t warrant him being shot and killed.
LeGrier said police told him his son was shot seven times.
He said his son, whom he described as a “whiz kid,” was home on his holiday break from Northern Illinois University.
At this stage you wonder what mind control techniques may have been applied to the young man, as well as whether this account is even real.
It's a sad thing to say these days; however, nothing is to be accepted at face value when it comes from the pri$m of the propaganda pre$$ and its endless agenda-pushing. Was this another case of a family being paid off so authority can fan the flames of racial division further in preparation for the inevitable martial law that will need be imposed to keep peace and order? It's happened before, and not that long ago.
I mean, you really have to wonder about these cops still blasting away after more than a year of BlackLivesMatter and all. Have they no sensitivity, or have the higher-ups said don't worry, no charges? Even worse, what if it is all lies and fakery? That's more the norm with the media now so it can not be easily dismissed.
Anyway, even if you accept the reported narrative as accurate, it doesn't make sense. Nothing in the pre$$ does anymore. That's the problem.
LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, told the Chicago Tribune that police didn’t have to react the way they did.
‘‘We’re thinking the police are going to service us, take him to the hospital. They took his life,” said Cooksey, who was not present during the shootings.

Chicago police referred requests for additional comment to the Independent Police Review Authority, the city’s main police oversight agency. IPRA spokesman Larry Merritt confirmed Saturday that the agency was investigating an officer-involved shooting but said he couldn’t release any further details and that it was ‘‘very early on in the investigation.’’
This is where the verbatim print picks up, and look at the excuses already being put up. This after a couple of videos of prior shootings just like this caused Christmas protests!
Emanuel’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from the AP.
The calls for resignation have been scrubbed.
Melvin Jones, the brother of the woman killed Saturday, told the Tribune his sister celebrated Christmas at her apartment Friday with about 15 other relatives.
He said Bettie Jones lived in a first-floor apartment with her boyfriend and was the mother of four daughters and a son. Her children range in age from 19 to 38. They include 19-year-old twins.
“There are so many questions and no answers,” Melvin Jones said. “I'm numb right now. Right now there’s a whole lot of anger, a whole lot of tears. . . . I don’t have time to feel. I have a funeral to prepare.”
Is that the kind of gun violence the mouthpiece media and politicians are talking about when they decry guns?
