"Germany to expand Afghan mission; Will be 3d-largest contingent there" by Judy Dempsey, International Herald Tribune | October 17, 2008
BERLIN - In the south yesterday, a NATO airstrike on a village near the embattled provincial capital of Lashkar Gah killed 25 to 30 civilians, Afghan officials in the area said. Although NATO confirmed that an airstrike had taken place in the area, where Taliban fighters have been battling NATO forces, it said the reports were being investigated and that the command was "unable to confirm any civilian casualties."
It's the same damn thing every time!!! Deny, deny, deny!
Local officials and residents of Nadali said a bomb had hit three houses in a village in the Loy Bagh District that were sheltering seven families seeking refuge from fighting elsewhere in the district.
Oh, Good Lord, NO!!!!!!!!
Mahboob Khan, the district chief, said in a telephone interview that 18 bodies had been pulled from the rubble and that as many as 12 other bodies remained buried. Khan said the bombing had caused widespread anger among the villagers.
Well, that is TO BE EXPECTED, no?!!!!
The BBC reported that one of its reporters had seen 18 bodies, all women and children.
See: Afghan strike 'kills civilians'
And the Germans are going to join in further?
Seeking to keep the biggest German peacekeeping mission from becoming an election issue next year, Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government won overwhelming approval from Parliament yesterday to send an extra 1,000 troops to Afghanistan over the next 14 months.
The vote was a relief for the government. Despite misgivings by pacifist wings of the Social Democratic Party, which shares power with Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats, the reinforcement won 424 votes out of 570.
Merkel, supported by the Defense Ministry, did not want the mission to be used by opponents during the election campaign next year, particularly since there is growing public opposition to continuing German military involvement in Afghanistan. --more--"
Germany's Chancellor and Parliament sounds just like our U.S. Congress and President -- funding an unpopular war!!
STOP the SLAUGHTER!!!! RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!
