"Officer accused of rape while on duty; 15-year veteran fired in Lawrence" by John R. Ellement, Globe Staff | October 1, 2008
A veteran Lawrence police officer is facing rape charges and has lost his job after being accused of kidnapping a woman off a Lawrence street and repeatedly sexually assaulting her while on duty.
Kevin Sledge was arrested in Pelham, N.H., yesterday on charges of rape, kidnapping, and indecent assault and battery. At a court hearing in New Hampshire, Sledge agreed to be returned to Massachusetts.
In a telephone interview, Lawrence Police Chief John Romero outlined the allegations against Sledge, 46, who has been on the force for 15 years. Romero said that while on duty and assigned to the booking room early on Friday, Sledge left his post, drove in his personal car to a Lawrence neighborhood, and picked up an apparently inebriated woman.
Oh, this guy is LOWER than LOW!!!! Preying on a DRUNK WOMAN?
He then drove back to the station, parked in a nearby lot, and returned to work. Over the next 90 minutes, Romero said, Sledge repeatedly left the station, went to his car, and sexually assaulted the woman. After getting a cellphone call around 4 a.m., a friend of the woman arrived at the station, Romero said. Sledge, Romero said, told the friend that the woman was "sleeping it off" in his car and to come back in an hour.
When the friend returned, Romero said, the woman told her what had happened. --more--"
