In a sign that President-elect Barack Obama intends to elevate science to greater prominence, John P. Holdren, a Harvard physicist widely recognized for his leadership on energy policy and climate change, will be appointed White House science adviser this weekend, the Globe confirmed yesterday....
Holdren, who was an adviser to the Obama campaign and a member of a scientific advisory committee to President Bill Clinton, is a specialist on energy, climate change, and nuclear proliferation.
He is a professor of environmental policy and director of the Program on Science, Technology, and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. He also directs the Woods Hole Research Center, an ecological research hub in Falmouth, and is a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the nation's premier organization of scientists.
"John brings enormous strengths in two areas of science policy: energy and the environment," said Sheila Jasanoff, a colleague of Holdren's and a professor at Harvard Kennedy School who has written extensively about the role of scientific advice in democracies. "I think if he is appointed, he will send a signal to the scientific community, which has been disenchanted in the current administration, that science is very important and will be listened to."
I'll reserve judgment on that one. If nothing comes out his arse other than global pfft-pffts, I'm not going to be happy.
Since being elected, Obama has explicitly said that issues such as global warming and alternative energy will be a priority....

CHICAGO - .... There was always one call Blagojevich regularly took, his aides say, and that was from Rahm Emanuel, his congressman, his one-time campaign adviser, and more recently - and troubling for Emanuel - one of his contacts with President-elect Barack Obama's transition staff.
The rapport Blagojevich and Emanuel shared over the years has suddenly become a troubling liability for Emanuel and the new president he will serve as chief of staff. Emanuel and Obama have remained silent about what, if anything, Emanuel knew of the governor's alleged efforts to peddle Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder....

Emanuel's refusal to discuss the matter publicly, and the few comments offered by Obama to date, have prompted questions about Emanuel's ties to Blagojevich and what fallout he will face as the criminal case unfolds, although sources have said he is not a target of prosecutors.

Even so, any hint of scandal for Emanuel threatens to tarnish Obama's promise of new political leadership free of scandal and corruption....
