Oh, I forgot, he's a superhero(?):

June 1, 2009

CONSIDERING the sad state of the world this spring, local folk are at risk of not being able to enjoy the luxuriant month of June. Jobs are vanishing into the black hole of a Great Recession. A mini-despot with electrified hair is setting off nuclear explosions in northeast Asia. General Motors is going broke. Taliban fanatics are blowing themselves up all over Afghanistan and Pakistan.

But on the other hand: Tom Brady is back.

Not only has the gentleman quarterback of the New England Patriots recovered fully from last fall's surgery to repair injuries to his left knee; not only is he tossing spirals once again to his teammates on the fields of Foxborough; but the husband of supermodel Gisele Bundchen is saying he has arrived merely at the halfway point of his gridiron career. He wants to play football for another decade!

Recent migrants to this region may not yet grasp why this news may gladden the hearts of so many people. These newcomers will discover soon enough that New England's joy goes beyond a lust for more Super Bowl victories. What the masses appreciate in Brady is an old-fashioned virtue that seemed to disappear from the world after Hollywood stopped making movies with heroic characters played by Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, or Gregory Peck. Call it integrity.

And there is something else. Those male chauvinists fretting that Brady may lose his competitive fire now that he has taken on the roles of husband and father can relax. "I want to play this game I love, be with my wife and son, and enjoy life," Brady said the other day. Like a president charged with managing an economy while caught in a war, the Pats' QB can do more than one thing at a time.

--more--"

Am I the only one offended at such insulting drivel posing as an editorial?
