"South Carolina's governor admits to affair; Had harbored presidential ambitions" by Philip Rucker and Manuel Roig-Franzia, Washington Post | June 25, 2009

.... As Sanford digressed about his boyhood adventures on the Appalachian Trail and airplane trips around the globe with just $100 of emergency money, about “God’s law’’ and moral absolutes, people standing behind him in the Capitol Rotunda could be seen smirking. Sanford is known for sometimes quirky behavior.

During his six years in Congress he turned down his housing allowance and slept on a cot in his Capitol Hill office. A frugal governor, he requires his staff to use both sides of a Post-it note and rose to national prominence this year by rejecting federal stimulus funds for his state, drawing the ire of lawmakers there.

Probably one of the four states that has a balanced budget. That's why the power structure found it "quirky."

He even once lampooned pork spending in the budget by carrying two pigs onto the floor of the state House chamber. (The pigs, apparently, were not housebroken and made a mess of Sanford’s suit and the regal carpet.)

But yesterday, Sanford stood out for a stunning confession....

"Politicians urge disgraced Sanford to resign as governor; Campaign donor demands return of his money" by Jim Davenport, Associated Press | June 26, 2009

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sanford had used state resources on at least one trip that included a tryst with his lover....

Even the first lady, Jenny Sanford, seemed inclined to let her husband fend for himself, a departure for a woman who has served as his closest political adviser for years.

“His career is not a concern of mine. He’ll have to worry about that,’’ she told reporters as she drove away from the family’s beach house yesterday with children in the car. “I’m going to worry about my family and the character of my children. I’m going to take it a day at a time, and right now I am going out on the boat.’’

Do you have a boat to live on, American?

Maybe they could vacate the mansion and turn it over to homeless vets?
