Friendship Rotted in Boston

"Rot sinks Mass. tall ship's summer schedule

SALEM, Mass. --
The Friendship, a replica of an 18th century sailing vessel based in Salem, is expected to be out of commission for the rest of the summer because rot discovered in its bow is more extensive than it first appeared. The rot has already forced the 11-year-old, 104-foot replica of an East Indiaman to miss Sail Boston earlier this month. Now the Salem Maritime National Historic Site has announced that the ship will also miss the July 31-Aug. 1 Salem Maritime Festival and at Newburyport's Yankee Homecoming Aug. from 13-16. The park services Web site says scheduled appearances at the Gloucester Schooner Festival and the Boston Harbor Islands Regatta in September are tentative. The rot was discovered during routine inspections in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
