"State won’t offer early retirement

State and municipal workers hoping to take advantage of an early retirement program are out of luck. Governor Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray, and House Speaker Robert DeLeo issued a joint statement yesterday saying the state will not adopt an early retirement incentive program as it has during past fiscal emergencies. The three said that based on past experience, early retirement programs have not saved state and local governments much money and have proved costly to the state retirement system. They also said they support increasing the healthcare contributions for public workers who retire after Feb. 1, 2010, to 20 percent. Those who retire before that will pay the current 15 percent (AP)."
