NEW YORK - After yet another weak month, retailers are preparing to fight for their share of crucial back-to-school shopping. But they may have to keep discounting to keep consumers coming in, given escalating job uncertainty.
Particularly worrisome in yesterday’s same-store sales reports: Mall-based teen stalwarts such as Abercrombie & Fitch were among those hit hardest as families looked for bargains.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, is expected to be a big winner as it woos young shoppers with trendy electronics and fashions, but its sales are no longer included in the monthly data.

Retailers in all sectors reported weak same-store sales for June. Even low-priced Costco Wholesale Corp. saw same-store sales decline compared with last June, when federal stimulus checks helped business.

WASHINGTON - Even though new claims for jobless benefits fell more than expected last week, dipping below 600,000 for the first time since early January, the number of Americans seeking this safety net points to an economy that is still very weak. Layoffs are slowing, but jobs are scarce, leaving nearly 7 million Americans collecting unemployment checks and retailers looking for customers.
Just wondering what's up with the fudging of the numbers, MSM?
One day it's 6.5 million, the next day 7.
And the REAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE?

Each month, I receive from Leo Hindery an update on "America's effective unemployment rate" which includes not only the official unemployment figures but other data points showing off-the-books unemployed or underemployed people.
The numbers are staggering and are aggregates of official data. They matter because various Obama administration officials including the President himself started off calling for huge stimulus packages to help generate "jobs, jobs, jobs!"
But now, I have been hearing more and more from senior Obama economic team members about the jobs they hoped for coming at the very tail end of an economic recovery. Others are talking about a GDP recovery -- but not a jobs recovery. They are admitting as well that they underestimated the severity of this recession and its impact on unemployment levels.
And all this while Goldman Sachs and other financial houses have seen their balance sheets get cleaned up and bonuses surge....

Yesterday’s figure indicates that “very steep job losses’’ probably will continue and that the unemployment rate will keep rising, said Zach Pandl, an economist at Nomura Securities International. Claims may not drop to 350,000 until the middle of next year, he said.
