PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - As the first estimated death toll from Tuesday’s earthquake - 45,000 to 50,000 - circulated yesterday, Haitians in the capital were largely left to fend for themselves.

Rescue efforts were personal - a frantic excavation for a child, parent, or friend missing in the rubble. Two days after the quake struck, a massive international operation was just beginning to take shape.

At Toussaint L’Ouverture International Airport, aid workers from the United States, Belgium, Brazil, France, and the United Nations hurriedly unloaded supplies from cargo planes. Dozens of weary people hoping to leave the country were camped outside the airport, but the building was closed to commercial flights. Thousands of dazed survivors and the injured huddled together in the streets, unsure where their next meal would come from.
And they wee ALREADY STARVING!
They wheeled away the dead and injured in carts and trucks, and fashioned tents in front of the crumpled National Palace and in soccer fields because they had nowhere else to sleep.
On the busy road leading from the airport to the Grand Rue, the main boulevard in the heart of the city, a promenade of misery dragged suitcases, balanced bundles on their head, or piled into overflowing pickups, determined to keep going.

With hospitals damaged, one of the most urgent needs was medical care. Last night, dozens of people lined up at a clinic set up by Doctors Without Borders in a private house across from the organization’s damaged main office. Staff members loaded at least two dozen bodies on a truck.
On Delmas Street, across from Good Samaritan School, 36-year-old Duchaire Valcius stood in front of his flattened apartment building, which he said he escaped with only the pants and green-striped shirt he was wearing. His hands were caked in dust from trying to dig out his belongings. But the effort proved futile, so he joined the crowds wandering the streets.
He was inside his apartment Tuesday afternoon when the earthquake hit. As the ground shook, he rushed outside and ran as buildings collapsed around him in a rush of air and dust.
“It was so scary,’’ he said. “I saw death right in front of me.’’
His neighbor Montrevil Laguerre, 57, hobbled in front of their building yesterday, leaning on a stick because a concrete block had fallen on his foot. Laguerre’s 1-year-old son and his mother-in-law were believed dead inside. Laguerre said he had not eaten in two days.
“Nobody’s been here,’’ he said when asked about relief efforts. “Everyone is in misery. Everyone is sleeping on the street.’’
With many roads blocked by debris, it was difficult to traverse the sprawling city yesterday to gauge the scope of the destruction or whether it had spread to all parts of the island. To be sure, many buildings in the capital were still standing, and communications with relatives in the United States were improving.

The young woman was crushed by a fallen pole as her mother sold chicken at a nearby street stand.
“She is the only one I have in my life,’’ Lagust said. “I saw her. I touched her. She’s dead. We’re just trying to get her out.’’
As she spoke, the air erupted in shouts and the sound of gunfire. Municipal police waving pistols and a machete spotted a gang of looters carrying sacks of goods. The police shouted “Get back, get back!’’ The looters turned and raced in the opposite direction.
Above them, helicopters roared, a sign that aid was on its way.

What I noticed today was VERY MINIMAL MENTION of U.S. GROUND TROOPS in Haiti. The guy at the gas station said three reservists from the company were called up and are being sent, and the MSM has butchered and censored things like this:
"A small contingent of US ground troops could be on their way soon, although it was unclear whether the troops would be used for security operations or for humanitarian efforts."
The guy at the gas station said 10,000!!!!
So WHY WOULD the MSM be SO SILENT about that, readers -- among so many other things?
