Occupation Iraq: Uptick in Violence

Then the SURGE FAILED, didn't it?

With all the FUTURE WARS being PROMOTED by the war-pushing paper, you forget about the ones they already started.

"Bombs kill 7 Shi’ite pilgrims in Iraq" by Associated Press | December 28, 2009

BAGHDAD - A bomb killed five Shi’ite pilgrims in a procession in northeast Iraq yesterday, and blasts in Baghdad killed two more pilgrims as millions of people marched to commemorate the most important Shi’ite religious observance.

Pilgrims traveling to the southern holy city of Karbala have come under repeated attack during the 10-day religious ceremonies that culminated yesterday with huge processions. Dozens of pilgrims have been killed and more than 150 wounded during the Ashura observance by insurgents hoping to intensify sectarian violence that reached a peak in 2006 and 2007, though the pace of violence has dropped sharply since then.

I simply no longer believe it.

Security was tight in Karbala, 50 miles south of Baghdad, where 25,000 additional security personnel deployed. Snipers watched marchers from rooftops, and bomb detection dogs were used in the search for explosives.

Yeah, the attacks ALWAYS SEEM to BREAK the HIGH-SECURITY areas, ever notice that?

A roadside bomb in the town of Tuz Khormato, 110 miles northeast of Baghdad, struck worshipers yesterday morning, killing five and wounding 28, police and medical officials said.

A police official said the minister for youth and sports, Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, was among those in the targeted procession, but was unharmed. One of his bodyguards and a police captain were among the dead. In western Baghdad, a roadside bomb targeted a minibus carrying pilgrims, killing one and injuring six, another police official said.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed five Sunni security guards - including one by beheading - in a gruesome predawn slaying yesterday at a village checkpoint in central Iraq, officials said.

The five victims were members of the Sons of Iraq, or Awakening Councils - a Sunni-dominated security force now on the government payroll that has been targeted in revenge attacks after helping turn the tide against Al Qaeda. Authorities were alerted to the checkpoint in the village of Tal Massoud shortly after the 2 a.m. shooting, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the attack with the media. The village is about 30 miles north of Baghdad. The police official described a scene of bullet-riddled bodies littered across the checkpoint. One body, he said, had been beheaded....

Oh, well, it must have been "Al-CIA-Duh."

U.S would take it off with a missile.

The victims were part of the Sunni tribe of Khazraj. They are the latest example of attacks on Sahwa, the Arabic word for Awakening. Some of the force fought American troops as insurgents, before tiring of the violence and turning on their former allies, the militant group Al Qaeda in Iraq.

The U.S. CHECKS must have HELPED, too!!!

The councils have been widely credited with stabilizing Iraq after joining US and Iraqi forces in the anti-Al Qaeda drive about three years ago. But they have been hit by a steady barrage of revenge attacks since then. Some also have complained of delayed or missed paychecks after the US military stopped bankrolling the Sahwa last year and turned over the accounts to Iraq’s Shi’ite-led government. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has repeatedly said he would honor the pledge to continue paying them.

So they killed their own? The guards were Sunni.

The United States is seeking to ease some of the group’s concerns. The American military also has been monitoring attacks against Awakening leaders - 212 of whom have been killed in the past two years. The US military, which tallied the deaths, blames Al Qaeda for the attacks.

Oh, I SEE!!

We "don't do body counts" when it comes to IRAQI CIVILIANS, but when it comes to American soldiers or our paid assets, meticulous!

In other deadly shootings yesterday, an Iraqi Army intelligence officer was killed in the eastern Baghdad neighborhood of al Baladiyat, Iraqi police officials said. Drive-by shooters targeted Iraqi Army First Lieutenant Wadi Direa Atiyah as he was driving his car, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Atiyah was wearing civilian clothing at the time.

What, LA gangs running around Iraq now?

Last night, two women were killed and five people were wounded when three mortar rounds landed in al Baladiyat, a police and a medical official said. Among the wounded was a 4-year-old child, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb and a suicide bomber struck a government building in the city of Ramadi on yesterday, killing at least 24 people and wounding the governor of Anbar Province, according to Iraqi police officials and witnesses....

The bombings in Ramadi follow a string of about 40 assassination attempts in the past month in the western province of Anbar, mostly targeting politicians, police officers, religious figures, and tribal sheiks, according to Iraqi police officials. The uptick in violence has raised fears that Anbar is on the verge of a deadly relapse.

Then I guess we will JUST HAVE TO STAY, America.

And CUI BONO?

Yeah, what idiots!

That is progress, huh?

The province was considered a model of American progress in Iraq after an alliance between US forces and Sunni tribal leaders dampened a violent insurgency there between 2006 and 2007. After yesterday’s bombings, Iraqi authorities imposed a citywide curfew, closing down universities and schools, sending students home and increasing the number of military checkpoints in the city. US forces responded to the attacks.

Oh, I thought we WERE NOT DOING THAT anymore!!

Witnesses reported seeing American soldiers manning checkpoints and US helicopters flying overhead.

But we are leaving.

Although it is unclear who is responsible for the attacks, the dual bombings carry signatures of Al Qaeda in Iraq....

Then it is NOT UNCLEAR TO ME at all -- or MOST IRAQIS, I imagine!

The violence has followed a decrease in the US military presence across Anbar Province. There were 57 American outposts in the province last year and only five now.

Then we are just going to have to STAY, huh, America?

Strange how those insurgents couldn't wait until we left and caused us a real headache, huh?

Of course, with all the other wars and future wars planned, I'll bet we leave anyway! Leaving 50,000 occupiers and countless contractors behind.

The consolidation and scaling down of US forces in Anbar is part of the larger American withdrawal plan from Iraq. By next August, US forces are slated to be down to about 50,000 troops, with only three outposts planned to remain in Anbar by the end of the summer.

Unless, you know....

"Insurgents claim credit for Iraq bombing" by Associated Press | January 4, 2010

Oh, well, that settles it, then. If my lying, agenda-pushing, war-promoting, enemy-creating Zionist AmeriKan MSM says it, well, it must be true, huh?

BAGHDAD - An Iraqi insurgent group claimed responsibility yesterday for a double bombing last month that killed 24 people and severely injured a provincial governor.

The Islamic state of Iraq called the Dec. 30 blasts in Ramadi, about 70 miles west of Baghdad, “a divine blow’’ against “the criminal security apparatus’’ in a statement posted on an Islamic website.

Was it from Texas or Maryland?

Of course, with the UPTICK in VIOLENCE the Globe stopped covering it.

Oh, there was one area where there was no uptick:

"No US combat deaths in Iraq in December" by Washington Post | January 2, 2010

BAGHDAD - No Americans died in combat in Iraq in December, a milestone for the US military, the top US commander in the country said yesterday....

So how many Iraqis did?

A turning point in the almost seven-year-long war....

Isn't that about the three millionth turning point since we got there?

Attacks have dropped from more than 200 a day two years ago to about 15 a day now, according to the head of the US Central Command, General David H. Petraeus....

Then WHY are we STILL THERE?

Update:

Today's Globe article on Iraq:

You understand what the blank space means, right?

I rest my case; how many Iraqis died yesterday?
