AMMAN, Jordan - Humam Khalil Abu Mulal al-Balawi, the Jordanian suicide bomber who killed eight people at a CIA outpost in Afghanistan last month, was shown in a video broadcast yesterday saying that the attack was carried out in revenge for the 2009 killing of the Pakistani Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud.

Balawi, wearing green camouflage fatigues and holding a weapon in his lap, appeared in a video on Al-Jazeera satellite television denouncing his “enemies,’’ Jordan and America. Balawi’s father, Khalil, confirmed that the man in the video was his son. “This is a letter to the enemies of the nation,’’ Balawi said in the video, referring to the Islamic nation, or ummah. “To the Jordanian intelligence and the American Central Intelligence Agency.’’
He was shown sitting beside another man whom a Pakistani news report identified as Hakimullah Mehsud, the aggressive young militant who took the reins of the Pakistani Taliban after Baitullah Mehsud’s death and has spearheaded an intense string of terror attacks. The image supports Taliban claims that Balawi had, at least, support among the most senior militants in the country.

Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a CIA missile strike in northern Pakistan in August. Balawi, a doctor who worked in a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan, blew himself up on Dec. 30 at a CIA base in Khost, in eastern Afghanistan. US officials have described him as a double agent who was taken onto the base in Afghanistan because the CIA hoped he might be able to deliver top members of Al Qaeda’s network, according to Western government officials....

The Taliban video was the latest glimpse into the last days of Balawi, a man intelligence officials believe had worked in a calculated and patient way for at least a year to strike a major blow against US intelligence operations in the region. Shortly after the video aired on Al-Jazeera, Balawi’s father came to the door of his home in the Jordanian capital, Amman, and amid sighs and some tears, confirmed that it showed his son. “My heart is tearing apart. Who is the one who destroyed the one that I brought up?’’ he said in a critical tone. “Who is the one who turned him from a human doctor to someone who carries out such a thing?’’
Still, he said, he was not astonished by what his son had done. “We are not surprised,’’ he said. “Fighting the arrogant and unjust American who kills civilians and innocent people makes the whole Islamic world hate America.’’

One theme that has been consistent in the family’s comments since Balawi’s identity emerged was that he became a changed man after he was arrested a year ago by the Jordanian authorities during the Israeli offensive on Gaza, and was questioned over his jihadi website writings.

The Jordanian authorities released Balawi after three days, and he disappeared shortly afterward to Pakistan, according to his wife and Jordanian officials. The Jordanian government maintains that it was in fact Balawi who later contacted them from Pakistan offering intelligence on Al Qaeda. Growing visibly enraged while speaking to a reporter yesterday, Khalil al-Balawi criticized intelligence officials for his son’s change. “I blame the agencies that recruited him and changed him,’’ he said. “They turned him from a human, a doctor, to a person with a heart full of negative and hostile emotions toward others.’’

In addition to killing seven Americans at the outpost, Balawi’s attack also killed a Jordanian intelligence officer and distant relative of King Abdullah II named Captain Sharif Ali bin Zeid. He is thought to have been Balawi’s Jordanian handler who was bringing Balawi to a meeting of US intelligence officials at the base, Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost, near the Pakistani border. In October, Mehsud’s Taliban fighters fled their sanctuary in the South Waziristan tribal area during a Pakistani military offensive into the region. Over the past three months more than 600 people have been killed in attacks generally depicted as retribution for the offensive....

Mahmood Shah, a former security chief for Pakistan's tribal regions who has deep contacts in the nation's army, said although the Pakistani Taliban likely played a major role, al-Qaida probably masterminded the attack. The Haqqani network, a highly autonomous Afghan Taliban faction, probably also gave consent because it controls much of Khost....
Shah a PAID SHILL, and as for Haqqani:
"Haqqani.... credited with introducing suicide bombing to the region.... cultivated as a "unilateral" asset of the CIA and received tens of thousands of dollars in cash for his work.... He may have had a role in expediting the escape of Osama Bin Laden.... In July 2008, CIA officials confronted Pakistan officials with evidence of ties between Inter-Services Intelligence and Haqqani. Haqqani has been accused of involvement in the 2008 Indian embassy bombing in Kabul...."

"It shows the close coordination between al-Qaida and the Pakistani Taliban," Shah said, noting that the extent of those links had at times been downplayed, even though analysts generally agree that Islamist militant groups in the region are increasingly intertwined. Though linked, the Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan Taliban are separate movements....
But both militant movements are largely driven by Pashtuns, an ethnic group that straddles both sides of the Afghan-Pakistan border and whose members easily slip back and forth between the countries....

The secretive eastern Afghan CIA base that was attacked was reportedly was used as a key outpost in the effort to identify and target terror leaders, many of whom were taken out by the drone-fired missile strikes....
There's been no letup in missile strikes on Pakistan's tribal regions....
There have been at least five such missile strikes in North Waziristan since the bombing in Khost.
