LONDON - More than half of the lawmakers in the House of Commons were asked to repay expenses as Parliament tried to free itself of its biggest scandal in modern times.

Thomas Legg, the retired civil servant who led an investigation into the expense claims, said 392 lawmakers and former lawmakers had been asked to repay $1.77 million that had been paid out to cover costs for their housing, cleaning bills, and furniture....
The revelations, which showed lawmakers claimed for items ranging from a floating house for ducks to the cost of clearing a moat, sparked a scandal that engulfed all parties and led to a collapse in public respect for Parliament....

The highest repayment, of $67,762, came from Labour lawmaker Barbara Follett, wife of the millionaire novelist Ken Follett. She claimed almost $56,000 for security patrols at her home, just under $14,360 for six telephone lines, and nearly $4,800 to insure “fine art’’ in the house....

Prime Minister Gordon Brown repaid $21,900 mainly for claiming too much for cleaning and laundry.
