The MSM's Wide Latitude

Seeing as I'm moving east tonight.

Around 20-40 degrees in the Eastern Hemisphere from what I reckon.

Let's go top down:

"Police in Russia break up protests" by Associated Press | February 1, 2010

MOSCOW - Russian police broke up anti-Kremlin protests in Moscow and St. Petersburg yesterday and detained more than 100 demonstrators, including several opposition leaders.

In Moscow, several hundred demonstrators gathered in a central square, defying a ban imposed by authorities. The protesters said the ban violated the Russian constitution’s guarantee of the citizens’ right to gather.

They denounced the policies of President Dmitry Medvedev and his predecessor and mentor, Vladimir Putin, who continues to wield broad powers as Russia’s powerful prime minister.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know the Zionist mob has it in for Putin 'cuz he ran 'em out of there!

Protesters shouted “Shame!’’ and “Down with Putin!’’ as police in riot gear pushed them into buses.

See?

I mean, he's not the cuddliest guy in the world and he is KGB; however, this is the agenda-pushing Zionist prism of a paper we are looking through!

Several dozen protesters were detained, including opposition leaders Boris Nemtsov; Eduard Limonov; Ilya Yashin; and the head of the Memorial rights group, Oleg Orlov.

Police spokesman Viktor Biryukov said that about 300 people took part in the rally, and that about 100 were detained.

Police also quickly dispersed a similar rally in St. Petersburg, detaining most of several dozen protesters who had gathered on downtown. Some of the demonstrators were beaten with truncheons.

Protests also were held yesterday in Yekaterinburg, Russia’s third-largest city, in the Ural Mountains; in Krasnoyarsk, in central Siberia; and in the far eastern port of Vladivostok. Police did not move to break them up, according to Ekho Moskvy radio.

Yeah, all right, those protesters get coverage in the agenda-pushing papers, other do not.

I wonder why they even bothered with this next item.

"In Cyprus, UN chief promotes unity" by Associated Press | February 1, 2010

NICOSIA, Cyprus - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Cyprus yesterday in a bid to reenergize slow-moving talks aimed at reunifying the ethnically divided island.

Ban’s first visit to Cyprus is seen as a show of support for talks between the island’s Greek Cypriot president, Dimitris Christofias, and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

Christofias and Talat have achieved only marginal progress in 17 months of open-ended negotiations. But Ban said he is pleased that the leaders have achieved significant progress on the key issue of power-sharing under an envisioned federal model during talks this month.

“I’m here to show my personal support to the Cypriot-led talks to reunify the country,’’ Ban said. “My visit is a reflection of the importance I have attached to the current efforts . . . to reach a settlement.’’

Cyprus was divided into an internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north in 1974, when Turkey invaded after a brief coup by supporters of union with Greece. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey, which maintains 35,000 troops there.

Ban’s trip also aims to dispel pessimism on both sides that the leaders can end the dispute, which is impeding Turkey’s bid to join the European Union and harming EU-NATO cooperation.

Wide differences remain on arrangements on property lost during the war, extending Turkey’s military intervention rights, and territorial adjustments.
