LA Shooting Story

For the record, I would prefer it if people were not shot and killed.

"L.A. chief defends deadly police shooting" by Associated Press | September 8, 2010

LOS ANGELES — Police Chief Charlie Beck yesterday defended an officer’s shooting of a knife-wielding man whose death sparked a violent protest in which demonstrators pelted police with rocks and bottles.

Beck told the Police Commission that witness and officer accounts indicate that the officer who killed Guatemalan immigrant Manuel Jamines on Sunday acted “in immediate defense of life’’ and that he was warned in English and Spanish to drop the knife, the Los Angeles Times reported.

You know, there are no protests when a white boy or a black man get beat down.

The shooting prompted demonstrations Monday afternoon near MacArthur Park in an area west of downtown with a large population of immigrants from Central America.

Demonstrators marched back and forth between a bustling shopping area where the shooting occurred and the Rampart police station three blocks away. Some held a candlelight vigil.

On Monday night, some protesters began hurling rocks, bottles, and debris at officers and set trash on fire....

Doesn't help the cause, sorry.

Protesters contended the man was drunk but not dangerous and say officers should have used a nonlethal weapon to subdue him.

Beck said bicycle officers frequently do not carry the selection of nonlethal weapons that are found in patrol cars....

By the time the confrontation ended at about 2 a.m. yesterday, four people had been arrested on misdemeanor counts of inciting a riot, Officer Bruce Borihanh said....

"LA police chief defends shooting, draws jeers" by Associated Press | September 9, 2010

LOS ANGELES — Police Chief Charlie Beck was greeted by boos, whistles, and chants of “justicia’’ last night by an angry Spanish-speaking crowd at a community meeting intended to quell violence that erupted this week after police fatally shot a knife-wielding man.

You know, the illegal immigrant rallies are really beginning to scare me.

They sure are acting like them.

A crowd of about 300 packed a school in the Westlake neighborhood where Manuel Jamines, 37, was shot to death Sunday by an officer after he allegedly lunged toward the officer with a switchblade.

Beck was jeered when he tried to defend the officer’s actions by reading a witness’s account of how Jamines had threatened two women.

Beck said the witness, a neighborhood resident who was not named, reported to three bicycle officers that a man with blood on his hands had tried to stab her and a pregnant woman next to her.

The woman heard the three officers telling the suspect to drop the knife, then she heard three or four shots, turned around, and saw Jamines on the sidewalk, Beck said.

“She referred to the officers as her angels who had descended from heaven . . . and saved her life and that of the pregnant lady,’’ Beck said.

The crowd exploded when they heard the witness’s account. One man in the audience called out that the story sounded like it was made up in Hollywood.

It is looking more and more like everything the authorities put out is.

Beck, city officials, and consuls general from three Latin American countries scheduled the meeting as senior officers tried to reach out to residents of the central Los Angeles neighborhood.

The shooting has turned into a rallying point as community members, aided by outsiders, took to the streets Monday and Tuesday night to highlight past injustices and vent ongoing frustrations.

Outsiders? What outsiders? Who is stirring up trouble in America's streets?

Police have said they have been taken aback by the level of protest for what appeared to be a clear-cut case of justifiable use of force.

Not so clear-cut.

Each year, the LAPD is involved in up to about 40 shootings. Those that typically cause controversy involve unarmed or surrendered suspects.

Police should have handled the situation differently, residents say, and the fact that police officials are surprised shows the department is out of touch with the people.

True of all levels of government in AmeriKa.

And from the officer's service record it appears he was a good cop:

"LA officer who killed man involved in other shootings" by Raquel Maria Dillon, Associated Press | September 10, 2010

LOS ANGELES — The police officer who shot and killed a knife-wielding man whose death has sparked three days of violent protests in Los Angeles had been involved in two previous shootings while on duty, according to a media report.

The Los Angeles Times report came as hundreds of people returned to the streets for a third night of protests over the fatal shooting of Manuel Jamines, 37, sporadically throwing rocks and bottles at officers and setting scattered rubbish fires.

And I have heard no criticism or condemnation from government; isn't that interesting?

Earlier Wednesday evening, Police Chief Charlie Beck faced an angry crowd at a community meeting intended to quell the violence.

Citing police officials and records, the Times said that Officer Frank Hernandez, a 13-year department veteran, shot a female robbery suspect in 1999 when the woman allegedly pointed a handgun at Hernandez and his partner and refused orders to drop the weapon. Her injury was not life-threatening.

In 2008, the Times reported Hernandez shot an 18-year-old assault suspect who tried to flee, then pointed a gun at Hernandez and another officer. Hernandez shot the man once, wounding him.

Beck voiced support for Hernandez in an interview with the Times.

Citing privacy laws, Beck would not discuss the past shootings or any details of Hernandez’s personnel file. He told the Times that Hernandez’s performance should not come under suspicion because of previous shootings.

Why should it?

The agenda-pushing, pro-illegals paper here is acting like the cops should never have to use their guns.

Detective Gus Villanueva said he had no immediate comment when reached by the Associated Press early yesterday.

At the community meeting, a crowd of more than 300 packed a school in the Westlake neighborhood where Jamines was shot to death Sunday by Hernandez after he allegedly lunged toward the officer with a knife.

The crowd jeered Beck when he defended officers by reading a witness’s account of how Jamines threatened her.

Beck said the witness, a neighborhood resident who was not named, told three bicycle officers that a man with blood on his hands tried to stab her and a pregnant woman next to her.

As the woman ran away, she heard the three officers telling the suspect to drop the knife, then she heard three or four shots, turned around, and saw Jamines on the sidewalk, Beck said.

“She referred to the officers as her angels who had descended from heaven to save her life and that of the pregnant lady,’’ Beck said.

The crowd exploded when they heard the witness’s account. One man in the audience called out that the story sounded like it was made up in Hollywood.

Beck and city officials scheduled the meeting to counter rumors and reach out to residents of the neighborhood just west of downtown where Jamines was shot.

The killing Sunday turned into a rallying point as community members, aided by outsiders, took to the streets three consecutive nights and used the death to claim past injustices and vent ongoing frustrations.

Seems as if I have seen all that before.

"Appeals court rejects town’s immigration law" by Associated Press | September 10, 2010

HAZLETON, Pa. — A federal appeals court ruled yesterday that Hazleton, Pa., may not enforce its crackdown on illegal immigrants, dealing another blow to 4-year-old regulations that inspired similar measures around the country. The city’s mayor pledged to take the case to the Supreme Court.

The US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia said that Hazleton’s Illegal Immigration Relief Act usurped the federal government’s exclusive power to regulate immigration....

So when are they going to start doing it?

Terrorists Could Attack Camp Pendleton

I guess terrorists are not that big of a concern anymore.

Hazleton, a northeastern Pennsylvania city of more than 30,000, had sought to fine landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and deny business permits to companies that give them jobs. A companion measure required prospective tenants to register with City Hall.

Mayor Lou Barletta had pushed the measures in 2006 after two illegal immigrants were charged in a fatal shooting.

Yeah, somehow those do not raise the same hackles or get the same coverage in the agenda-pushing corporate media.

The Republican mayor, now mounting his third try for Congress, argued that illegal immigrants brought drugs, crime, and gangs to the city and overwhelmed police, schools, and hospitals.

Right, he's being political and bordering on racism if he tells the truth.
