"Rhode Island town may sue to stop bridge tolls
Portsmouth’s Town Council is considering filing a federal lawsuit to try to stop the state from imposing tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge beginning in July. The Newport Daily News reported that on Monday night the council will discuss a draft lawsuit prepared by Town Solicitor Kevin Gavin, who said the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority’s toll plan is illegal. The authority approved tolls Wednesday for the Route 24 bridge between Portsmouth and Tiverton. The state would charge 75 cents for drivers with in-state E-ZPass transponders, $3.75 for those with out-of-state transponders, and $5.25 for drivers with no transponders."
