"Magazine: Terrorist attack planned
BERLIN - Al Qaeda is planning a major attack on Germans before September's election to wreak revenge for the deployment of troops in Afghanistan, a German magazine cited security officials as saying yesterday. Der Spiegel said German intelligence officials and the Federal Crime Office believed German firms based in Algeria and German citizens in northern Africa were in particular danger. The officials also warned of attacks in Germany. The new assessment is largely due to a warning from the US government, believed to be based on information from al Qaeda in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, said the weekly. An Interior Ministry spokesman declined to comment (Reuters).

BERLIN - The trial of four suspected Islamic militants charged with plotting a series of deadly bombings in Germany began in Duesseldorf yesterday. The highly anticipated proceedings have been billed here as the biggest terrorism trial since the top leaders of the far-left Red Army Faction were prosecuted in the 1970s.

The four men are accused of planning attacks against high-profile targets, including the airport in Frankfurt and American military installations like Ramstein Air Force Base, attacks prosecutors say could have surpassed the fatal bombings of commuter trains in Madrid in 2004, in which nearly 200 people were killed.
German authorities arrested three of the four suspects in September 2007 with 26 military detonators and 12 drums of hydrogen peroxide, the main chemical in the explosives used in the London suicide bombings of July 2005. All four men have been held without bail leading up to the trial, which is expected to involve some 200 witnesses and take up to two years to complete....
The police arrested Yilmaz and two German citizens who had converted to Islam, Fritz Gelowicz and Daniel Martin Schneider, in a rented cottage in the village of Oberschledorn in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, earning them the appellation "the Sauerland Cell" here in Germany. Investigators followed the men for more than six months, assembling what prosecutors say is a rich trove of evidence, including recorded conversations between the suspects and intercepted e-mail correspondence.

Attorneys for Gelowicz and Schneider issued a statement yesterday challenging the legality of much of that evidence.

Terrorism arrests often do not lead to convictions because of a number of factors, including difficulties in proving actual danger of plots before they have been carried out, as well as the methods used by intelligence agencies in uncovering them, which are not always admissible in court.

One of the four accused militants declared in open court yesterday that he was ready to plead guilty because he found the proceedings so tedious.

After Yilmaz announced his intention to confess, presiding judge Ottmar Breidling had plain words of his own for him and the other defendants, telling them that it was time to come clean and stop playing games. "All cards on the table out in the open and not marked," Breidling said.

The trial recessed so that the four accused men could meet privately with one another, under guard but without their lawyers present, said Ulrich Egger, a spokesman for the court. Afterward, the four men informed the court of their plans to plead guilty.

The trial is set to resume on June 23. Three of the four defendants face life sentences, which in Germany usually means release after 15 years. The fourth faces up to 10 years. Egger cautioned that no confessions had yet been made. "You can't be sure about anything," he said.
