ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A suicide bomber disguised as a guard set off an explosion inside the heavily guarded office of the United Nations World Food Program yesterday, killing at least five people and wounding five others, according to police and UN officials.
The midday explosion occurred in the lobby of the three-story United Nations office building....
The building is protected by walls, security cameras, and several armed guards and police.
Well, apparently not.
Authorities said the bomber was dressed as a security officer and allowed to enter the heavily guarded building after he asked to use the bathroom.
Couldn't come up with a better cover-story lie than that?
The United Nations said it was temporarily closing all its offices in Pakistan after the noontime bombing, which blew out windows and left victims lying in the lobby....
Despite the office closures, the UN said its Pakistani partner organizations would continue distributing food, medicine, and other humanitarian assistance. The world body said it would reassess the situation over the next several days.
Pakistani authorities began an investigation into the security lapse, saying they would question guards who failed to stop the bomber from carrying out the first suicide attack in Islamabad in four months. Police were reviewing footage from surveillance cameras along with the log of visitors, and security guards were questioned.

The attack occurred a day after Hakimullah Mehsud, the new Pakistani Taliban leader, met reporters near the Afghan border, vowing more attacks in response to US missile strikes on militant targets in Pakistan. Mehsud denied government assertions that the militants were in disarray and said his fighters would repel any army offensive on their stronghold in South Waziristan....
Kinda convenient, huh? And the reporters didn't turn over the location in that hard to verify and confirm area, huh?

Many of its offices are surrounded by 12-foot-high blast walls. Its staff members are driven in bulletproof cars and not allowed to bring their families with them on assignment in the country. The World Food Program compound, which employs more than 70 people, is surrounded by square metal cages filled with sand and small stones to protect against blasts and projectiles.
Sounds like a prison.
Extremists in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq seeking to attack high-profile Western targets have shown no hesitation in striking foreign humanitarian agencies, including the United Nations, regardless of the work they are doing in relieving the suffering in the countries....
