Around New England: New Hampshire U-Turn

Stay off the highways, drivers.

"NH transportation chief wants I-93 tolls

SALEM, N.H. --New Hampshire's transportation chief says he will seek federal approval for an electronic toll-collection system on Interstate 93. Transportation Commissioner George Campbell said he plans to apply with the Federal Highway Administration in April to locate a toll system on I-93 near the Massachusetts border. Campbell told The Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence, Mass., that a toll is a fair and sustainable way to pay for widening a 20-mile stretch of I-93 from Salem to Manchester. Officials in southern New Hampshire towns oppose the plan, saying tolls would be an economic hardship and drive many motorists onto side roads to avoid tolls.

Yup.

Yeah, get off here, readers, and watch traffic once we cross the state line:

"Officials warn of prescription drug abuse

New Hampshire's top law enforcement officers say prescription drug abuse is growing at an alarming rate.

That's what happens when you hook kids up at 2 and let pharmaceutical profits outweigh people.

Attorney General Michael Delaney and Safety Commissioner John Barthlemes told the Associated Press yesterday that they are planning a March 30 meeting to draw attention to the problem and map a strategy to combat it.

Everything is always in war terms in the MSM, notice that?

They said law enforcement needs help from the medical and treatment communities in dealing with the problem. Delaney said deaths from all kinds of drug overdoses more than tripled between 1995 and 2007, with a substantial number involving prescription drugs (Boston Globe February 26 2010)."

Man suspected in 19 bank robberies held

A man suspected in 19 bank robberies in Massachusetts and New Hampshire was arrested last night in Swanzey. Anthony Gilbert, 43, of Alabama, known as the “PJ Bandit’’ for a puffy coat that he wore in several of the alleged robberies, was arrested shortly before 7 by the FBI and officers from Swanzey and Keene, according to Gail Marcinkiewicz, an FBI spokeswoman. Gilbert will probably have a court appearance in New Hampshire on Monday, Marcinkiewicz said. A warrant had been issued for him from an alleged robbery on Feb. 19 in Weymouth, believed to be his last in a spree that began in Massachusetts in October, Marcinkiewicz said.
