Globe Makes Mess at UMass

The Globe really took some heat for this piece.

I would like to think my two-cents helped.

"UMass is ranked among world’s best" by Martin Finucane, Globe Staff | September 17, 2010

The University of Massachusetts has been ranked among the best universities in the world by a British newspaper.

UMass ranked 56th in the Times of London’s Top 200. UMass was the only public university in New England in the Top 200. It ranked fourth in Massachusetts, behind Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Tufts. Harvard was ranked No. 1 in the world.

UMass, which was ranked as a five-campus system, was the 14th highest-rated American public university — behind public universities in California, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Washington, and Minnesota — and the 33d highest American institution, public or private, the university said.

Jack M. Wilson, UMass president, said in a statement that the school is “truly a great university, and we are delighted to be recognized in such a dramatic fashion.’’

The ranking, one of a half-dozen college rankings by various publications using different measures, was made as debate has swirled over the quality of the university.

The Globe reported earlier this month that, despite improvement efforts that date back generations, the UMass flagship, depleted by budget cuts, has had trouble cracking the ranks of the nation’s top schools.

The Globe article generated a storm of criticism from university officials, students, and alumni.

Yeah, they have taken out two full-page advertisements in the Globe blasting the article.

I wonder if the Globe gave them a discount rate because of the insult.

Update:

"UMass looks to break sushi roll record

The University of Massachusetts is celebrating the start of the academic year with an attempt to make the world’s largest sushi roll. Three-hundred volunteers, along with celebrity chefs, will try to build the 400-foot sushi roll today using 650 sheets of nori seaweed, 200 pounds of rice, 200 pounds of seafood, 100 pounds of avocado, 100 pounds of cucumber, 2 pounds of sesame seeds, 5 gallons of soy sauce, and 6 pounds of wasabi (AP)."

They may be world-class but they still stink.
