Slow Saturday Special: The Father of Fracking

"George P. Mitchell, at 94; oilman, ‘father of fracking’" by Michael Graczyk |  Associated Press, July 27, 2013

HOUSTON — Billionaire oilman, developer, and philanthropist George P. Mitchell has died at his home in Galveston, his family said. He was 94.

Mr. Mitchell, born in Galveston, was the son of Greek immigrants, and became one of the wealthiest men in the United States. He is considered the father of hydraulic fracking, pioneering the now-common process for recovering natural gas from shale deposits that has led to an energy boom while raising concerns about its environmental effects.

Mr. Mitchell graduated at the top of his class at Texas A&M University in 1940, and was one of its top benefactors.

His wife, Cynthia, died in 2009. They had 10 children.
