Heartland said it believes the security breach compromised millions of cards - making it one of the larger data breaches in recent memory - but isn't sure of the precise number. In one of the largest cyber crimes in history, thieves stole information from as many as 100 million debit and credit cards handled by Framingham-based retailer TJX Co.'s payment system.
In February three Florida men were arrested and charged with fraud and grand theft for allegedly using card numbers stolen during the Heartland breach to make more than $100,000 in fraudulent purchases at Wal-Marts in Tallahassee. It's not clear how the men obtained the stolen card numbers.
The US Secret Service, which is involved in the Heartland investigation and the Florida arrests, yesterday said it is not ready to release any details.
