VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI called yesterday for a new world financial order guided by ethics and the search for the common good, denouncing the profit-at-all-cost mentality blamed for bringing about the global financial meltdown.
In the third encyclical of his pontificate, Benedict pressed for reform of the United Nations and international economic and financial institutions to give poorer countries more of a say in international policy.
“There is urgent need [for] a true world political authority’’ that can manage the global economy, guarantee the environment is protected, ensure world peace, and bring about food security for the poor, he wrote.

The document, “Charity in Truth,’’ was released a day before leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations meet to coordinate efforts to deal with the global meltdown, signaling a clear Vatican bid to prod leaders for a financially responsible future and what it considers a more socially just society....

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI and President Obama will meet on July 10, a much anticipated Vatican audience with a president under attack by some American bishops for his support of abortion rights....
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs confirmed the meeting and told reporters in Washington that Michelle Obama would accompany the president to the Vatican audience.

Pope Benedict had a warm relationship with Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, an abortion opponent, though the Vatican opposed the Iraq war. Polls have shown that Obama received a majority of Catholic votes, especially from the growing number of Hispanic Catholics.

SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI said yesterday that countries must continue receiving refugees despite the difficulties they create, while also addressing the causes that drive so many people from their homes.

Italy has been battling waves of illegal migrants and has enacted a controversial accord with Libya under which it turns back refugees intercepted at sea before they can reach Italian shores to apply for asylum.
WE DO THAT to Haitians, so what's the big deal?
Vatican officials, the UN refugee agency, and aid groups have denounced the policy. Benedict did not specify Italy in his comments marking the UN World Refugee Day, which was celebrated Saturday, making his appeal more general to all countries that deal with refugees.
