NEW YORK - Two men linked to an alleged Al Qaeda associate accused in a plot to attack New York City with homemade bombs were arrested yesterday after one of the men caused a traffic accident while under surveillance.
Zarein Ahmedzay pleaded not guilty to a false statement charge in an indictment accusing him of lying to the FBI about a trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The other suspect, Adis Medunjanin, remained in custody, and it was unclear when he would appear in court.
You see, the government can lie to you and then they can charge you with lying to them. Anybody catch a whiff of fascism?
Two law enforcement officials familiar with the case said earlier yesterday that Medunjanin was facing possible charges of providing material support to terrorism. The officials were not authorized to discuss the case and spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
During a brief appearance in federal court in Brooklyn, Ahmedzay, 24, was ordered held without bail until a hearing Tuesday. Defense lawyer Michael Marinaccio said the indictment made no mention of terrorism. “It seems to me that if [prosecutors] had that kind of information, we’d be reading about it in the indictment,’’ he told reporters outside court.

Ahmedzay and Medunjanin were first publicly linked to the investigation in September, when investigators raided their homes shortly before the arrest of their old Queens high school classmate Najibullah Zazi, a Colorado airport shuttle driver who has pleaded not guilty to supporting terrorism. The latest arrests came after the FBI went to Medunjanin’s Queens apartment Thursday afternoon with a search warrant and seized his passport.
So the FBI was harassing him.
After the search, he apparently became upset and left in his car. While driving erratically, Medunjanin called 911 and made angry comments referencing Allah, the law enforcement officials said. He got into an accident and was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
So he was BASICALLY PROVOKED into ROAD RAGE!!
Federal authorities later took him into custody for questioning before deciding to arrest him early yesterday, the officials said. Agents arrested Ahmedzay at about 3 a.m. while he was driving a cab in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan, authorities said.
“He’s not guilty,’’ Shried Ahmedzay, 22, his brother, said yesterday. “He works hard to support his family.’’ The brother said it was obvious that authorities had him under surveillance for months, noting that unmarked cars frequently parked around his apartment building.

Medunjanin, who is originally from Bosnia, and Ahmedzay, who was born in Afghanistan, are US citizens.

FBI agents arrested Mohammed Wali Zazi yesterday at his home in a Denver suburb after a previous charge, lying to the government, was dropped. He had been out on bail.

A new indictment unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn accused Zazi of conspiring with others to destroy or hide “glasses, masks, liquid chemicals, and containers’’ that were evidence in a foiled terrorism plot....

Ahmedzay, a 24-year-old cabdriver, has pleaded not guilty to lying to the FBI about places he visited during the 2008 trip. The three men have denied any wrongdoing.

Najibullah Zazi told a judge the terror network recruited him to be a suicide bomber in New York, where he went to high school and once worked a coffee car just blocks from the World Trade Center site. “I would sacrifice myself to bring attention to what the US military was doing to civilians in Afghanistan,’’ Zazi said in court.

While entering the city, he was stopped by police for a routine traffic violation on the George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey and New York. Police allowed him to go free, but were suspicious and kept a close watch on his movements.

Days later, authorities raided several Queens apartments, including a friend’s home where Zazi had stayed.... A law enforcement official familiar with the case told the AP that Zazi was spooked by the traffic stop and flushed the explosive materials down the toilet after arriving in New York....

One of the people familiar with the Zazi case told the AP that Zazi decided to cooperate after being warned that his mother could face criminal immigration charges. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is in progress.

The charges were filed just three days after Zazi pleaded guilty to the same ones. Zazi attended Flushing High School with Medunjanin and Ahmedzay and traveled with the men to Pakistan - where they were recruited and trained by Al Qaeda, prosecutors allege.
Zazi has been cooperating with federal authorities.

While speculation as to the identity of Zazi’s coconspirators had centered on Medunjanin and Ahmedzay, they had not been formally implicated in the domestic terrorism plot until the new indictment. Jeffrey H. Knox, assistant US attorney overseeing the case, told the court that it is likely other defendants would be charged in the case. The men abandoned the attack in September just days before planning to carry it out, after realizing they were under government surveillance.
