Under Stalin’s leadership, the Soviet Union lost 26.6 million people in the war, including about 8.7 million soldiers, according to new Defense Ministry data released this week.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Soviet losses might have been smaller if not for Stalin’s repression of the military leadership and “the hypothesis that Hitler wouldn’t attack our country.’’

MOSCOW — US, French, and British troops strode across Red Square for the first time yesterday in a Victory Day parade marked both by the usual impressive display of Russia’s military might and by an unusual emphasis on international cooperation.
Who would have ever thought the Russians would be the peacekeepers in this world, 'eh, AmeriKans?
In recent years, the parade commemorating the 1945 defeat of Nazi Germany has been used by Russian leaders to launch veiled criticism of the West, but President Dmitry Medvedev struck a different tone this year....
He said in his address to the more than 11,000 soldiers on the square:
“Only together can we counter present-day threats. Only as good neighbors can we resolve problems of global security in order that the ideals of justice and good triumph in all of the world and that the lives of future generations will be free and happy.’’
He's making me cry.
Victory Day, Russia’s most important secular holiday, always sees elaborate observances throughout the country.
This year’s was especially intense, with holiday preparations and parade rehearsals dominating TV news reports for the past week.
Such attention appeared in part to be a tacit acknowledgment that even the youngest World War II veterans are in the last years of their lives.
Thank them before it is too late.

BRUSSELS — Vice President Joe Biden said yesterday that Washington remains determined to deploy its antimissile system in Europe to counter the danger of Iran’s nuclear program and its long-range ballistic missiles.
“The United States and European Union have stood side-by-side to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons,’’ Biden told the European Parliament. “Iran’s nuclear program violates its obligations under NPT and risks sparking a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.’’ The NPT is the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty....
Except it DOES NOT VIOLATE the NPT, Joe, because they are ONLY MAKING POWER PLANTS and WE ARE SUPPOSED to HELP THEM!

Yesterday, the chiefs of defense of NATO nations met in Brussels with their Russian counterpart, General Nikolai Makarov. After the meeting, NATO’s top military officer, Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola of Italy, said Makarov had offered missile defense as an area in which the alliance and Russia could cooperate.
“Wouldn’t it be ironic, as the Iron Curtain fell and the threats of mutual assured destruction diminished among the superpowers, a new arms race would emerge in some of the most unstable parts of the world,’’ Biden said.
“In the face of the threat that Iran poses, we are committed to the security of our allies,’’ Biden said.
Translation: We will do whatever Israel says.
Iran denies that it is developing nuclear weapons. It has repeatedly pointed out that the only nuclear-armed nation in the region is Israel, one of America’s closest allies.
Yeah, and the WHOLE WORLD KNOWS IT!
