Boston Globe Brief of the Day

Hidden in the B-section!

"Soldier dies of wounds in Afghanistan

A member of the Connecticut National Guard has been killed in Afghanistan. Governor M. Jodi Rell’s office said Staff Sergeant Edwin Rivera, 28, of Waterford died Tuesday night after being shot May 20 in Laghman Province. Rivera was a member of the First Battalion, 102d Infantry Regiment, one of two Connecticut National Guard units that were deployed in the region late last year (AP)."

"Nuclear plant shut down once again

The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant went into automatic shutdown yesterday while it was starting back up after a month of routine maintenance and refueling.

Plant spokesman Larry Smith said that it was not known for certain what caused the shutdown at about 3:35 p.m., but that it may have been triggered by a problem in an electrical switchyard just outside the plant. No radiation was released, and the reactor will be powered back up after the problem is identified and corrected, Smith said. Vermont Yankee had been off line for a refueling outage since April 24 (AP)."

It should be off-line permanently.

That didn't even make my printed paper and I live ten miles away.

These did, but didn't make the web version.

"Senate budget debates heat up; Bolster rules on illegal immigrants" by Noah Bierman, Globe Staff | May 27, 2010

State House News Service reported that one advocate, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, Derrek Shulman, warned that the language of neo-Nazis and white supremacists had begun seeping into public discourse on the issue.

Wow, NOTHING is AS IT SEEMS in my jewspaper, is it, dear readers?

Republican senators were furious, taking the allegation personally, and called on Senate leaders to condemn the statements, which they did.

Republican leader Richard R. Tisei, a candidate for lieutenant governor, said people “outside this little cocoon that we all live in, the real world,’’ are concerned about the issue and not because they are being “mean-spirited.’’

See: Boston Globe Still in its Liberal Bubble

A Suffolk University/7 News poll released last night found that 84 percent of the voters want a measure requiring proof of citizenship for state services.

Yeah, because WE HAVE TO HAVE IT EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Senate Democrats said they opposed a requirement that recipients of services show an affidavit or driver’s license, saying it would cost state agencies hundreds of thousands of dollars....

As if THOSE LOOTERS CARED about TAXPAYER DOLLARS!

No, they would RATHER FUND ILLEGALS while SLASHING YOUR SERVICES and INCREASING YOUR TAXES, Bay State resident!

"Students here illegally rally in hope of living American dream" by Maria Sacchetti, Globe Staff | May 26, 2010

Carlos Savio Oliveira, 22, a native of Brazil, said he has been in the United States without legal papers since he was 8. The stocky former football player went to high school on Cape Cod and hoped to join the US Navy. But immigrants here illegally are barred from joining the military.

Of course, that isn't costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars, taxpayers of Massachusetts.

So yesterday, Oliveira and dozens of other members of the Student Immigrant Movement based in Boston rallied at the State House and then marched to Brown’s Boston office to urge him to support bipartisan federal legislation that would let Oliveira and thousands of other youths nationwide apply for legal US residency. The Dream Act would create a path to legal residency for youths who arrived before they turned 16 and have lived here for five years. They would have to complete two years of college or the military, among other requirements to qualify....

Yeah, the AGENDA-PUSHING, WAR-PROMOTING PAPER is ALL FOR YOU, illegals!

They are the ones that PROMOTED the POLICIES that made it necessary for you to flee home in search of a better life -- and now they want you as cannon fodder for Zionist wars!!!!

Yeah, I AM TIRED of the NEVER-ENDING AGENDA-PUSHING, dear readers!

Ever notice if you are not a gay, illegal, or global warmer the agenda-pushing MSM doesn't have much time for your protest?

"Protesters decry bills that would charge inmates fees" by David Abel, Globe Staff | May 26, 2010

Prisoner advocates rallied in front of the State House yesterday, urging lawmakers to reject amendments to the state budget that would require inmates of county jails or state prisons to pay a raft of new fees, including $5 a day to subsidize the cost of their confinement.

Then STATE GOVERNMENT has FAILED because WE AGREE to CARE FOR THEM as part of the INCARCERATION!

Sorry, smug and self-righteous Massachushitts, but YOU ARE NO BETTER than the alleged redneck backwaters you bad-mouth!!!!!

The advocates argued that the proposed fees, which have passed in the House, would place a heavier burden on already impoverished inmates and their families, many of whom send money to prison to pay for toiletries. They also said the proposed fees could lead to increased crime, as some indebted inmates may feel the need to commit new crimes to repay their prison debt.

You know, it is very interesting: the CRIMINAL NEWSPAPER is ALWAYS CONCERNED about CRIMINALS, ILLEGALS, LOOTERS, LIARS, and the like.

I call it SERVING a CONSTITUENCY -- the only one left still reading them because I'm fading.

“The amendments are unreasonable, unrealistic, and disrespectful,’’ said the Rev. William E. Dickerson of Greater Love Tabernacle Church in Dorchester. “They would only contribute to a vicious cycle of recidivism.’’

Supporters of the legislation say it would help cash-strapped county and state prisons, as well as promote greater responsibility for inmates.

So WHEN do we throw the BANKERS in JAIL and MAKE THEM START KICKING BACK some ILL-GOTTEN LOOT?

The House bill and similar versions being debated in the Senate would also impose fees on inmates of $5 for seeing a doctor, for a dental appointment, or for new glasses. There would be a $3 fee for filling a prescription.

See: Brubaker

Proud, Massachushitts?

The fees would be deducted from inmates’ prison accounts, but they would not have to pay if they did not have sufficient funds.

Proponents of the legislation said they are acting following a decision by the state’s highest court this year that rejected similar fees imposed on inmates by Bristol County. The Supreme Judicial Court ruled that only the Legislature can set such fees.

“The thing is with prisoners is that a lot go in with a ton of money that they put in a canteen, which they spend on candy and other goodies,’’ said state Representative Elizabeth Poirier, Republican of North Attleborough, who sponsored the House bill. “A lot of prisoners have a problem with a lack of responsibility and similar kinds of issues, like not understanding the consequences for their actions.’’

What STINKING PoS that passes for a human being say this??

The f***ing REEKING ARROGANCE EMANATING from the STATE HOUSE is GAGGING, folks!!!!!!!

"No jail time for two convicted in Big Dig concrete case; They get home confinement, probation" by J.M. Lawrence, Globe Correspondent | May 27, 2010

Two former managers for Aggregate Industries NE Inc. who were convicted of supplying substandard concrete to Boston’s Big Dig highway project have avoided jail terms.

US District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns on Tuesday rejected federal prosecutors’ call for prison terms of at least seven years for the men. Instead, he sentenced Robert Prosperi, 64, of Lynnfield, and Gregory A. Stevenson, 53, of Furlong, Pa., to six months of home confinement, probation, and 1,000 hours of community service.

The pair were convicted of 135 felony counts including conspiracy to commit highway project fraud and mail fraud; conspiracy to defraud the government with respect to claims; and making false statements in connection with highway projects and mail fraud....
