Around New England: Tacking Around New Hampshire

"NH woman sentenced to 6 months jail in boat crash" by Lynne Tuohy, Associated Press Writer | April 21, 2010

LACONIA, N.H. --A New Hampshire woman who was leader of a recreational boating association when she killed her best friend in a speed boat crash after a night of drinking was sentenced Wednesday to serve at least six months in jail.

THAT'S IT?!!

Erica Blizzard, 36, of Laconia, was convicted March 18 of negligent homicide for failing to keep a proper lookout during the 2008 crash into a ledge on Diamond Island in Lake Winnipesaukee. Stephanie Beaudoin, of Meredith, died, and Blizzard and another passenger, Nicole Shinopulos, of Burlington, Mass., were injured.

"I lost my best friend, and that is something I will have to live with for the rest of my life," Blizzard, her voice breaking at the beginning, read from a prepared statement before she was sentenced. "I loved Stephanie very much, and I am so sorry and so heartbroken for what has happened."

Blizzard must pay more than $15,000 to Beaudoin's family for funeral costs and $4,000 to the New Hampshire Marine Patrol for its rescue efforts. She also was ordered to do 200 hours of community service....

She got off easy!

The day after her conviction, while free on $75,000 bond, Blizzard was cited for driving 84 mph on Interstate 93 and for driving in such a distracted manner that she failed to see the trooper who was trying to wave her down....

DRUNK?!?!!!

"Man fleeing from police jumps into Merrimack River and drowns

A New Hampshire man died after jumping into the Merrimack River early Tuesday morning in an attempt to flee from police in Methuen, authorities said.

The body of Stephen Gotto, 35, of Salem was pulled from the frigid waters about 200 yards from where he dived in, Steve O’Connell, a spokesman for the Essex district attorney’s office, said today. Police attempted to pull over a car that had been reported stolen Sunday out of Methuen. Gotto was a passenger in the vehicle.

A chase ensued, with the driver crossing the state line into New Hampshire before circling back into the Methuen area. The pursuit ended when the car ran out of gas and came to a stop on Interstate 93, O'Connell said. At that point, Gotto got out of the car and jumped off the I-93 bridge into the river.

What was he guilty of?

The driver, Joel Messina, 41, of Holbrook, was charged with receiving stolen property, the car, and other charges related to the case. He pleaded not guilty....

"Woman saved after car plunges into river

Three passersby in New Hampshire are being credited with helping save the life of a woman trapped in her vehicle after it plunged into the Lowell River in Ossipee. WMUR-TV said the 38-year-old driver was trapped in her vehicle after it went off Route 16 near a bridge at about 8 a.m. Sunday. Cody Nason said he saw smoke coming from below the bridge. Nason said he and others kept the woman’s head out of the water until rescue crews could free her. The woman was flown to a hospital in Maine. Her name and condition were not released (AP)."

Police find stolen safe at bottom of NH river

Police say they've found an empty safe in New Hampshire's Pemigewasset River that had $11,000 inside when it was stolen from a Gilford store. Police found the safe 75 feet from shore in 10 to 15 feet of water near the Bristol-New Hampton line. WMUR-TV reports the safe had been taken from the Beans and Greens store about eight months ago. Police say a hole had been cut into the bottom of the safe. Five people have been charged in connection with the stolen property. One is in prison and two have been convicted. The others are awaiting trial.

"Liquor commissioner charged with DWI

A state liquor commissioner was removed from his job yesterday after being charged with driving while intoxicated.

Really gets into his work, huh?

Richard Simard was stopped by Gilford police around 11:30 p.m. Saturday after Laconia police alerted officers to a possibly intoxicated driver, Gilford Police Chief John Markland said. Officers did a field sobriety test and Simard refused to submit a breath test, Markland said. The chief described the incident as a routine DWI stop but said his officers knew Simard’s position in state government. Governor John Lynch removed Simard from the commission yesterday. Simard’s term expired last July, but he continued to serve as commissioner in holdover status. Lynch said he will act quickly to nominate a replacement. Simard was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bond and is due in Laconia District Court May 6 (AP)."

"NH woman gets 20-40 years in Sox-Yankees dispute

NASHUA, N.H. --
A New Hampshire woman convicted of running down and killing a man with her car after he was said to have taunted her for being a New York Yankees fan has been sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison.

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

Forty-five-year-old Ivonne Hernandez was convicted in December of second-degree murder in the death of 29-year-old Matthew Beaudoin in a Nashua parking lot. Police say the dispute outside a bar started as an exchange about the Yankees and Red Sox.

I KEEP TYPING YOU that NOTHING GOOD comes from DRINK!!!!

Hernandez testified she was terrified because Beaudoin and others pounded on her windows when she made a comment about how many baseball World Series the Yankees had won compared to the Red Sox. The Nashua Telegraph says the judge told Hernandez Tuesday that she had not taken full responsibility for her actions.

Why did she have to open her trap?

I guess you better watch it on the New Hampshire roads, too.

Probably stand a better chance at the casino:

"Lynch may support online gambling bill

Though he opposes allowing slot machines and casino-style gambling, Governor John Lynch might support the legalization of online gambling to close a growing budget deficit. Lynch plans to unveil his plan for gambling in New Hampshire next week, and legalizing online gaming is among the ideas he’s considering, spokesman Colin Manning told The Telegraph of Nashua. Manning did not provide details, and it’s unclear how making online gambling legal would raise money (AP)."

"N.H. gambling vote tough to call; House lawmakers get slots measure" by Norma Love, Associated Press | April 20, 2010

CONCORD, N.H. — The odds are that New Hampshire’s House will do tomorrow what it has done for years when it considers a gambling bill — reject an effort to legalize video slots.

You know what is it about democracy that these groups don’t understand,’’ huh?

But the vote could be closer than in years past as lawmakers face choosing between tough spending cuts and finding more revenue.

Yeah WASTE TIME with a VOTE while the state is on fire.

The vote is on a bill that would legalize slots at six locations, including two on the Massachusetts border. The bill has already passed the Senate. House supporters are considering changing it to reduce the number of locations and slot machines allowed in hopes of gaining votes from reluctant lawmakers.

Governor John Lynch said last week he would veto either version but did not close the door completely to allowing gambling in New Hampshire. Lynch said he wanted to review a report by a gambling commission due at the end of May.

Even if the House approves gambling tomorrow, it won’t be the chamber’s last say on the bill. The House’s tax writing committee would have to review it, then return it for another House vote. Either way the vote goes, the issue is certain to be revived during budget talks in the coming weeks....

My interest in this story is waning.

Gambling backers believe lawmakers will find the promise of millions of dollars more attractive than cutting state aid to communities or services to patients with catastrophic illnesses.

The false promise.

Both cuts are part of the budget-cutting plan Lynch presented last week. The House votes on the cuts in mid-May, giving the House and Senate two weeks to negotiate a compromise. The legislative session is scheduled to end June 2. Lynch presented his plan last week to cut $85 million in spending, raise the cigarette tax by 20 cents a pack, and restructure state debt to close a projected $220 million budget shortfall....

NH Senate to vote on decriminalizing adultery

The Senate votes Wednesday whether to repeal New Hampshire's unenforced, 200-year-old criminal adultery law. The House passed the bill on a voice vote, but the Senate Judiciary Committee is recommending keeping the law on the books. The original punishments for adultery have been softened over the years. No longer do they include standing on the gallows for an hour with a noose around the neck.

I can think of some war criminals and looters that should be wearing one -- or going under the blade.

The owners of a number of New Hampshire businesses destroyed by a wind-whipped fire are asking the town of Hampton for help rebuilding. Owners of the former Surf Motel, Happy Hampton arcade and Mrs. Mitchell's Gift Shop are asking the Hampton selectmen to consider offering them a tax break. The Portsmouth Herald says the business owners say they lost a year's income in the Feb. 26 fire. The selectmen say they'd like to help, but it would take a Town Meeting Day vote to make it happen....

"N.H. regulator quits to criticize agencies from private life" by Holly Ramer, Associated Press | May 4, 2010

CONCORD, N.H. — The state’s top securities regulator said yesterday that he is stepping down so he can speak up about how the government mishandled a mortgage company accused of running a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.

Mark Connolly, whose resignation as director of the Bureau of Securities regulation takes effect May 14, said it would be impossible for him to remain a state employee while arguing that the public’s best interest has not been served when it comes to financial resources management.

It IS GOVERNMENT, right?

The company and its president, Scott Farah, have been accused of swindling hundreds of investors out of at least $80 million....

Get his DNA, New Hampshire:

"NH bill would expand DNA tests to all felons

New Hampshire could soon require DNA testing of all convicted felons, leaving Idaho as the only state without such a law. The state Senate voted Wednesday to pass a bill to expand the state's DNA collection law beyond those convicted of certain violent crimes. The Senate sent the bill back to the House to consider a minor amendment. Gov. John Lynch said he will sign the bill. The DNA profiles are entered into a national database used to match evidence left at a crime scene. Currently, all states except New Hampshire and Idaho collect samples from all felons. Nebraska was the latest to pass the broader testing legislation.

Video camera captures theft at gun shop

A video camera hanging over an elk head at a local gun shop caught a man smashing glass cases, grabbing some guns, and putting them into a suitcase before fleeing. Police say the man was in the Woodstock store for less than a minute early Monday. Police Chief Douglas Moorhead said the video shows the man entering Charlie’s Gun and Sports Store about 4 a.m. The video shows him using a claw hammer to break into two glass cases. Police say he took 11 handguns, stuffing them into the suitcase (AP)."

Of course, the camera didn't stop him and the police didn't catch him.

NH cops say Hudson gunshot death not a homicide

New Hampshire authorities say the shooting death of a 22-year-old Hudson man is not being investigated as a homicide.

Police say 22-year-old Anthony Girginis died of a gunshot wound early Sunday during a party attended by eight young adults at a Hudson home.

Alcohol again!

Will Baldwin, the owner of the home where Girginis died, tells the New Hampshire Union Leader it was an unfortunate accident.

Hudson police say they have recovered the firearm that killed Girginis.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin says the death is not being investigated as a homicide. He calls it a death investigation that is being handled by the Hillsborough County Attorney's office and the Hudson police.

WTF?

He shot himself, didn't he?

Teen finds 2.7 carat diamond at park

A New Hampshire teenager has a 2.7 carat diamond souvenir from his vacation to Arkansas. Peter Slowik, 14, of Strafford found the diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Ark., last week in another visitor’s footprint. The diamond is one of 75,000 found at the site since 1906, when farmer John Huddleston first unearthed diamonds there. The park is the only diamond-producing site open to the public. Amethyst, garnet, and jasper also can be found there. Visitors can search a 37-acre field plowed regularly to bring the stones to the surface. Park policy is finders keepers. The largest diamond found was a 40.23 white diamond unearthed in 1924 (AP)."
