"Sinn Fein leader calls for dialogue on Ireland's future; Adams invites US Irish to join in conversation" by Farah Stockman, Globe Staff | March 17, 2009
WASHINGTON - Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams called yesterday for an international dialogue on the future of Ireland in the wake of attacks by republican dissidents in Northern Ireland this month that killed two British soldiers and a policeman.
Speaking at the National Press Club, Adams called on Irish Americans to participate in the conversation about Ireland's future through conferences organized by Sinn Fein to be held on June 13 in New York and on June 27 in San Francisco. A key goal of the conferences, he said, was to seek the Irish diaspora's advice about the best strategy to try to reunify the country through peaceful means....
Adams - an Irish republican leader who persuaded the Irish Republican Army to abandon violence, helping to bring about a decade of relative calm after decades of violence - said his dream of a unified Ireland is more relevant now than ever, language that some analysts saw as a mainstream republican response to the killings by IRA dissident groups....
The uptick in violence after years of calm has surprised many international observers who saw the Irish peace process as a model for other seemingly intractable conflicts. The March 7 deaths of two soldiers, killed when gunmen opened fire as pizza was being delivered to their base, were the first army fatalities in the conflict since 1997. Two days later, a policeman was shot in his patrol car while responding to an emergency call. A total of 11 suspects have been arrested in the killings, including two more who were brought in yesterday.
The killings have raised fears that Northern Ireland, a semi-autonomous British province, might slip back into bloodshed. Tension between mostly Catholic republicans, who generally consider themselves Irish and wish to unify with Ireland, and the mostly Protestant unionists, who generally consider themselves British and want to remain part of Britain, has simmered for decades. Irish republicans, British loyalists and British security forces engaged in a conflict that stretched over some 35 years and caused more than 3,000 deaths. In 1998, a peace accord led to power-sharing that has brought about relative calm.
Under the 1998 agreement, Sinn Fein - once the political wing of the armed Irish Republican Army - pledged to use only peaceful means to pursue reunification. But splinter groups have continued to fight. Yesterday, Des Dalton, a leading diehard from the fringe group Republican Sinn Fein, referred to those who made peace as "traitors."
In Washington, Adams shot back. He condemned the attacks as a "full frontal assault on the peace process" and said they have no popular support. But at the same time, he warned that the British should not return to their old practice of subverting dissident groups using covert forces....
And then the MSM VEERS AWAY QUICK!!
Today, Adams is slated to meet with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and to attend St. Patrick's Day events at the White House with President Obama and on Capitol Hill. He is scheduled to speak at Harvard's Institute of Politics tomorrow.
Clinton and Obama meeting with a "terrorist?" Harvard hosting one? Egads!
