Two Amherst College graduates have pledged separate gifts of $100 million and $25 million to their alma mater, the school announced yesterday. The donations, to be paid over five years from donors who wished to remain anonymous, are the largest in the history of the Northampton college.

The $100 million pledge is among the largest single unrestricted cash gifts to a liberal arts school. The donations dwarf Amherst’s previous largest single infusion of $58 million, proceeds from the February 2008 sale of beach in San Clemente, Calif., that a member of the class of 1919 donated four decades ago.
