How come the "I was drunk" excuse is always the knee-jerk reaction?

A Massachusetts State Police detective was arrested over the weekend in Foxborough and charged with domestic violence.

Derek Cherven, 28, a trooper assigned to the Bristol district attorney’s office, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment yesterday morning in Wrentham District Court on charges of assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, after he allegedly tried to strangle his girlfriend, authorities said.

Cherven, of Foxborough, was immediately relieved of duty, and his service weapon was confiscated.

A hearing is scheduled today to determined if the State Police should place him on leave or on some form of restricted duty, State Police spokesman David Procopio said. He faces possible jail time and termination.

“The facts as alleged in the criminal charges are very serious,’’ Procopio said, “and if proven to be true, we have no tolerance for that.’’

Cherven was released on $5,000 cash bail and was allowed to go to an alcohol rehabilitation clinic in Florida for 30 days....

You can run but you can't kid, copper!
