Vacuuming Up Vermont

I probably missed a few spots; however, it will have to do:

"Prayer vigil held for missing grandmother

Three weeks after a Vermont grandmother disappeared from her Sheffield home, the community held a prayer service for her last night. Pat O’Hagan, 78, was reported missing Sept. 11. Her family has put out a flier reminding the public that a $20,000 reward — from the Vermont State Police, the FBI, and the family — has been offered for information leading to prosecution of those responsible. State Police say they and the FBI are aggressively investigating the case (AP)."

Oh, that makes me feel a whole pile better.

"Body may be missing Vt. woman; Camper discovers remains 10 miles from residence" by David Abel, Globe Staff  |  October 5, 2010

State Police in Vermont said yesterday that they had found the remains of a woman’s body about 10 miles from the home where a grandmother was abducted last month.

Major Ed Ledo, commander of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, said troopers are investigating whether the remains are those of Pat O’Hagan, 78, who disappeared from her home in Sheffield, Vt., around Sept. 10. She is originally from Chelmsford, Mass.

He said a local camper discovered the remains Sunday in a wooded area of the neighboring town of Wheelock....

O’Hagan's disappearance has been a mystery that has frightened her neighbors in Sheffield, a northern Vermont town with 600 people, and prompted many to begin locking their doors....

I do anyway. Makes it harder for police to kick the door down.

Bernard Ash, a neighbor of O’Hagan’s, said residents have been grappling with theories.

“Everybody’s got their own idea; everyone wants to be their own detective,’’ Ash said.
“It could be anything from she went off and had a stroke to God only knows. It’s really a shame,’’ he said.

Leslie DeGreenia, another neighbor, said he has been locking his doors at night now. He said he was happy there appeared to be some progress in the investigation.

“It gives us some answers, but it leaves us hanging with others,’’ he said. “It’s a relief to know they probably found her, but it keeps us wondering who did it and why.’’

"Death of Vt. woman is called a homicide" by John Curran, Associated Press  |  October 6, 2010

WATERBURY, Vt. — A body found in the woods Sunday by two bird hunters has been identified as that of a missing 78-year-old woman, and police called it a homicide yesterday.

Investigators used dental records to identify the remains of Pat O’Hagan, who lived alone in rural Sheffield, a town of about 700 residents in Vermont’s verdant northeastern corner that has no stores or stoplights....

Police investigators, who have said O’Hagan was forcibly abducted, said yesterday that they know the cause of death but will not divulge it, saying they want to preserve the integrity of the investigation....

"Teen on 3-mile swim rescued by boater

A Good Samaritan rescued a teenager from the Boston area who was struggling to stay afloat yesterday in Lake Champlain in Vermont, the US Coast Guard said. The grandfather of Anna Jeffken, 18, reported her missing at about 12:30 p.m., the Coast Guard said. Jeffken, who was visiting her grandparents, had written in her journal that she wanted to make a 3-mile swim from Juniper Island to Appletree Bay, according to the Coast Guard. A man aboard a sailboat spotted Jeffken treading water and waving her hands about 2 miles from Juniper Island near Long Rock Point and told authorities he had rescued her at about 2:20 p.m., the Coast Guard said. Jeffken was transferred to a Coast Guard station and evaluated by medics before being released."

"Red Cross appeals for more blood donors

The American Red Cross is putting out an urgent call for Northern New England residents to give blood. "3 cows shot in 2 incidents in Vt.

Three cows are dead after being shot from two roadways in Vermont. Vermont State Police say a Guernsey cow in Tunbridge was shot four times in its side around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The cow was discovered alive later in the morning but has since been euthanized. About 10 miles away, police say two Heifers were shot in the head in a pasture in Randolph Center around 3 a.m. One had died by the time its owner found it, and the other was later euthanized. A neighbor reported seeing three speeding vehicles in the area but nobody reported hearing gunfire. Shell casings from the Randolph Center incident and bullets extracted from the other cow will be sent to the Vermont Forensic Laboratory for analysis.
