Using her position as a customer service agent for the state Registry of Motor Vehicles, a Brockton woman allegedly made genuine driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants in exchange for cash bribes, federal agents say.
Agents arrested Janice Washington, 48, yesterday on charges of identity theft, alleging that she created licenses and sold them to those who brought her birth certificates and Social Security cards that obviously belonged to other people.
A cooperating witness told US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents that in the past year, he brought about 30 undocumented Brazilian immigrants to Washington, each of them bearing real documents previously issued to US citizens born in Puerto Rico.
In exchange for $1,000 a person, Washington gave applicants written tests in Portuguese - not Spanish or English, the official languages of Puerto Rico - and issued them licenses, according to an affidavit filed in federal court by special agent Dana Fiandaca....
Special agents on a task force investigating document and benefits fraud learned about Washington two months ago from a Brazilian national not named in the affidavit. He was arrested last year in Framingham for allegedly selling Puerto Rican birth certificates and Social Security cards to undocumented immigrants and has been indicted for identity theft and related charges....
This goes on all over the place, and happens a lot more than the B-section placement lets on. Then again, you understand the Globe's love for illegals if you have been paying any attention at all.
