"Wider checks on guns rejected in Senate" by Tracy Jan and Matt Viser | Globe Staff, April 17, 2013
WASHINGTON — Compromise legislation to expand mandatory background checks for gun sales failed Wednesday in the Senate, killing the best hope for proponents seeking action following the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre and prompting President Obama to label it “a pretty shameful day for Washington.”
Just colorful words of description, or bad-form puns, folks?
In an emotional Rose Garden statement after the vote, Obama accused gun-rights groups of distorting the debate to help block the most significant gun legislation that stood a chance of passage.
Wow, he's a fine one to talk.
Ever notice that the behavior leaders and governments decry is the exact behavior of themselves?
“They blocked common-sense gun reforms even while these families looked on from the Senate gallery,” Obama said, standing with parents of some of the 20 children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School rampage by a young man with a semiautomatic rifle.
Stop waiving that psy-op in our faces, and have you seen this, sir?
Get your f***ing cover stories straight first before you start throwing out slop, will ya?
Proponents needed 60 votes to prevent a filibuster on the background-check amendment, and they fell short, 54 to 46. New Hampshire Republican Kelly Ayotte was the only New England senator to vote no, among the 41 Republicans and five Democrats who were opposed.
I expect those Democrats to take an absolute hammering.
“Shame on you!” a spectator in the gallery yelled out in the chamber, prompting Vice President Joe Biden, who was presiding over the chamber in a symbol of the legislation’s importance to the administration, to gavel for order.
Many Republicans who opposed the legislation, which would have expanded background checks to gun shows and online sales, called it a slippery slope that would compromise the Second Amendment and would not ward off all future violence.
“Restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners will not prevent a deranged individual or criminal from obtaining and misusing firearms to commit violence,” Ayotte said in a written statement. The legislation, she said, “would place unnecessary burdens on law-abiding gun owners and allow for potential overreach by the federal government into private gun sales.”
Chris Cox, chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, thanked the senators who blocked the amendment. “Expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not reduce violent crime or keep our kids safe in their schools,” he said in a statement.
The Senate also defeated an amendment to ban sales of assault weapons, 40 to 60....
Proponents and opponents alike had predicted that provision would fail, in the face of opposition from Democrats from rural states.
The votes were a rebuke for a president who made gun control an emotional centerpiece of his State of the Union speech in January. Along with immigration reform and fiscal issues, guns have been a top item on his second-term agenda.
I will deal with those other issues below.
Without the compromise amendment on background checks, the overall gun bill, which contained some less controversial parts such as prohibiting “straw buyers’’ from purchasing guns for felons, will not win support. Senate majority leader Harry Reid is expected to pull the bill from consideration, leaving the possibility of future measures uncertain.
Polls show that nearly 90 percent of Americans support a strong system of background checks for gun purchases.
I don't believe that number, and if you are expecting me to take the agenda-pushers word....
But the failure of the amendment illustrates how vocal minorities were able to strongly influence the debate by targeting individual senators with outside pressure, channeled through Internet organizing.
Look at the agenda-pu$hing media crying! How distasteful.

There are a lot of things that bother me about the Boston Globe; it's why I have stopped buying it.
Groups beyond the National Rifle Association, the traditional representative of the gun lobby, played a major role. The National Association for Gun Rights used e-mail alerts, online videos, and a Facebook page to convey mocking imagery that targeted individual senators. “NO DEALS, NO GUN CONTROL,” the group blasted on its website.
In a series of Facebook posts, the group showed Obama as a puppeteer, controlling the strings of Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey, who forged the compromise amendment on background checks with a Democrat, West Virginia’s Joe Manchin. Stamped in red ink on the image: “Toomey Sold Out Your Gun Rights.”
On Monday, the group posted a doctored photo of Collins — one of 16 Republicans who voted last week to prevent an initial GOP filibuster on gun laws — with her eyes bulging as if she were a zombie. Within an hour, 5,413 people liked it on Facebook.
I see that word and that other thing far too often in my paper.
And what did the Globe do, find the most extreme controlled opposition website out there? You merit a mention you are part of the show.
Yeah, I am sick of the constant blanks be fired off.
Collins was bombarded by a host of groups in recent days. Organizing for Action, an offshoot of President Obama’s campaign network, ran an ad Friday on the Bangor Daily News website with this message: “Tell Senator Collins: It’s time to close background check loopholes.” That ad came a day after a full-page ad from the National Rifle Association that asked, “Will Obama’s gun control proposals actually work? His own experts say, ‘No.’ ”

Senator John McCain of Arizona praised Manchin and Toomey for their efforts during the debate preceding the series of votes. “You did the right thing,” said McCain, who was one of four Republican senators to vote for the measure....

In an interview after the vote, Murphy said, “I think there’s going to be outrage in this country tomorrow. There is a big political price to pay for senators who went against the will of 90 percent of their constituents.”
Wrong. There is relief, and it is not really an issue because of the endless propaganda coverage from Boston.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts denounced both gun lobbyists and the senators they support. “A minority of senators does the bidding of special interest groups that are more interested in profits than lives,’’ she said in a statement.
Welcome to our system of government, professor. I luv ya', but that doesn't mean we will always agree.
Democrats from Alaska, Arkansas, and North Dakota voted against the background checks amendment, along with Montana Democrat Max Baucus, a key member of the Senate leadership as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

With Baucus at the bottom of it.
Reid, a supporter of the plan, switched his vote to the prevailing ‘‘no’’ side to permit him to call for a revote in the future.
Okay, so WHAT SCHOOL SHOOTING or OTHER GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED ATROCITY is UP NEXT?
Was it SUPPOSED to be BOSTON before the BEDBUG(?) BUST?
The emotional loss for proponents was evident in Obama’s Rose Garden appearance....
Obama said the pro-gun lobbyists distorted the intent of the background checks in a bid to rile up gun owners and intimidate senators.
What a disappointment this war criminal has become.
“It came down to politics — the worry that the vocal minority of gun owners would come after them in future elections,” Obama said. “They caved to the pressure, and they started looking for an excuse — any excuse — to vote no.”
Obama also took the unusual step of singling out a remark of an individual senator for rebuke, making a veiled swipe at Kentucky Republican Rand Paul for comments Paul made Wednesday. Paul criticized the president for using the Sandy Hook families “as props.”
That's what actors are.
Obama addressed the comment and similar remarks, without mentioning Paul by name.
“ ‘A prop,’ somebody called them,’’ he said. “Are they serious? Do we really think that thousands of families whose lives have been shattered by gun violence don’t have a right to weigh in on this issue? Do we think their emotions, their loss is not relevant to this debate?”
Not speaking to the thousands of others, but Robby Parker laughing before getting into character was the clincher, as was that babbling fool Gene Rosen (who happened to be a member of the screen actors guild).

"Texas woman charged in death of prosecutor" by Manny Fernandez, Serge F. Kovaleski and Emma G. Fitzsimmons | New York Times, April 18, 2013
DALLAS — The wife of a disgraced justice of the peace has been arrested and charged with the murders of the Kaufman County district attorney, his wife, and another prosecutor, and she has told investigators that her husband was the one who shot them.
Her confession was contained in an affidavit filed with the arrest warrant, which said the woman, Kim Lene Williams, 46, had confessed in an interview with investigators on Tuesday. She described in detail her own role and that of her husband, Eric Lyle Williams....
Was she tortured?
The authorities have recently focused on Eric Williams, who was convicted last year of stealing computer equipment in a case handled by the two prosecutors.
Law enforcement officials have not publicly named Eric Williams as a suspect and have not formally charged him....
But investigators from local, state, and federal agencies have been focusing intensely on Eric Williams in recent days....

Obviously, that laughable cover story didn't take so they had to come up with this new script.
Eric Williams, 46, was already being held at the county jail on $3 million bond. He was jailed shortly after midnight Saturday, accused of sending an anonymous e-mail to law enforcement officials threatening another attack if his demands were not met.
A turning point in the investigation came late Saturday afternoon, when authorities arrived at a self-storage business a short drive from Kaufman. There, investigators found a large storage unit where Eric Williams kept a car and an assortment of guns, including handguns and assault rifles.
They could have been planted, although I must admit, this script is riveting.
The car, which he had purchased under someone else’s name, was a white Ford Crown Victoria that resembled an unmarked police car and was similar to the silver or gray Ford Taurus that witnesses had described fleeing the scene of the shooting of Hasse in January....
Eric Williams had been a sought-after lawyer, member of the chamber of commerce, and newly elected justice of the peace when he was accused of stealing computer monitors from a county building in May 2011.
The two prosecutors’ aggressive work on the case helped persuade a jury to find him guilty in March 2012. He was removed from office and his law license was suspended. His state-issued peace officer license — Eric Williams had nearly two decades of law enforcement training — was revoked.
Without a county salary or the ability to practice law in the state, he was unemployed and under financial stress, and he and his lawyers were convinced that evidence used to convict him had been tampered with and that McLelland had gone after him to settle a political grudge, according to court documents.
Oh, I DON'T DOUBT TAMPERING AT ALL!

PHOENIX — Arizona authorities say a package to Sheriff Joe Arpaio would have exploded if opened, leading to serious injuries or death.
Maricopa County Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan made the comment on Friday .
The package intercepted in Flagstaff on Thursday was addressed to Arpaio at his Phoenix office. It had been left in a parcel locker in Coconino County, outside Flagstaff.
Postal Inspection Service spokesman Keith Moore said a courier brought it to the main Post Office in Flagstaff, and authorities used a water cannon to neutralize the package.
Arpaio, the self-proclaimed “toughest sheriff in America,” said this was not the first time he was threatened. Arpaio is known for his strict treatment of inmates and cracking down on illegal immigration.
“Of course you worry. I’m a victim, I’m a witness. When you convict people, the victim has to be somewhat concerned. I’m a little concerned about my family,” Arpaio said.

"Calif. man killed by homemade explosive" Associated Press, April 16, 2013
COSTA MESA, Calif. — A man who was killed when a homemade explosive blew up at his California home was an eccentric who bicycled around his neighborhood dispensing antigovernment conspiracy pamphlets, a neighbor said Monday.
What a coincidence, huh? The same day of the Boston Marathon Bombings!
‘‘He definitely seemed paranoid about things and people,’’ Donna Swift said. ‘‘It was getting more extreme.’’
Lesson learned: PEOPLE on BIKES are TERRORISTS!
A bomb squad, the FBI and other investigators descended on a street in the Orange County city of Costa Mesa after the 52-year-old man died in a Sunday night blast. His name has not been released.
Oh, this is ABSOLUTELY STINK!!!
An ambulance had been called about 90 minutes earlier when neighbors saw the man lying on his front lawn, but he refused offers of help and went inside, neighbors said.
Police were called about 7:30 p.m. after neighbors heard the explosion, and the man was found dead at his home.
The man apparently was killed by a homemade explosive device but it was not immediately clear whether the blast was accidental or suicide, police said.
At least three homemade explosive devices, including at least one pipe bomb, were found.
‘‘There was one upon his person, one nearby — so we believe he was possibly wearing two — and there was one contained within the house,’’ police Sergeant Jerry Hildeman said.
The others were safely blown up by bomb disposal experts.
Swift, who has lived in the neighborhood for 17 years, said the man apparently had lived in the same home three doors down from hers since birth. He apparently lived there at first with his parents and brothers but currently lived alone and may have inherited the home, she said.
‘‘He was kind of a recluse, super-bright but very reclusive,’’ she said. ‘‘Never worked and [was] always on his bike.’’
He passed out pamphlets to neighbors and stores, including a brochure that he called ‘‘The Pricker,’’ Swift said.
You are being stuck, all right. PFFFFT!
About 11 years ago, he wrote a 14-page document that he distributed which contained some neighbors’ names and which prompted police to take him in for a 72-hour mental examination, Swift said.
Despite being odd, however, her neighbor always seemed polite and unthreatening. Swift said she had him over for dinner several times. ‘‘I never felt that I couldn’t be around him,’’ she said.
Was he ON ANY PRESCRIPTION PHARMACEUTICALS!?!?

"Obama budget plan may limit options" by Jim Kuhnhenn | Associated Press, April 15, 2013
WASHINGTON — President Obama’s budget overtures to Republicans may limit his bargaining power if the GOP ever returns to the negotiating table on a grand deficit-reduction deal.
In essence, Obama’s spending blueprint is a final offer, a no-budge budget whose central elements have failed to persuade Republicans in the past. By voluntarily putting entitlement cuts on the table, particularly a proposal to slow the rise of Social Security benefits, Obama has no other gambit to win tax increases from Republicans.
He's not getting those anyway. As Boehner said, he got his tax increase.
With many Democrats balking at what he is already offering, it is not politically feasible for him to offer the GOP anything more.
Puzzled Democrats maintain that Obama not only has given away his leverage, he also has threatened the very identity of his party, which sees Social Security as one of its signature achievements.
Like I've been saying, he's a great Republican president. Was it it that happens to these guys? First Clinton, now 'Bomber.
What has irked Democrats the most is Obama’s decision to include a significant shift in policy in his $3.8 trillion budget that would alter the government’s calculation of inflation, the Consumer Price Index. If adopted, this new ‘‘chained CPI’’ would change the way the government measures inflation and would slow the rise in Social Security benefits and other programs.
Those chains are for you, senior citizen.
In exchange, Obama is insisting on $580 billion in tax increases on wealthier taxpayers....
I hope it's not like the last "fraud" of an "increase."
