"Thermo Fisher's profit rises 21%

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. reported that fourth-quarter profit grew 21 percent as the scientific instrument maker said its laboratory business improved and expenses held steady.

Thermo Fisher said its profit rose to $290.2 million....

Botox maker will cut jobs

Botox maker Allergan Inc. said fourth-quarter profit dropped 6 percent, and the company plans to lay off about 460 employees, or 5 percent of its workforce, as more customers put off cosmetic treatments. The California company said patients are stretching out the time between getting wrinkle treatments, and that therapeutic uses of Botox aren't immune to the economy, either.

Botox, famous as a wrinkle treatment, is also used to treat certain kinds of neck pain, eyelid spasms, and crossed eyes. Allergan said profit in the quarter fell to $150.6 million....

Write-down drags down Time Warner

Media and entertainment giant Time Warner Inc. reported a fourth-quarter loss, hurt by a previously expected $24.2 billion write-down for its cable, publishing, and AOL assets. The company predicted flat earnings in the year ahead as it takes on major restructuring charges amid a declining advertising market.

Its cable unit also reported a loss and said it plans to cut 1,250 jobs, or about 2.6 percent of the unit's workforce, as its business slows. Time Warner owns 85 percent of Time Warner Cable and plans a spinoff of that interest.

The company, which owns Time magazine, cable networks CNN and HBO, and the Warner Bros. movie studio, posted a loss of $16.03 billion, or $4.47 per share. That compared with a profit of $1.03 billion, or 28 cents per share, a year ago....

New customers boost Akamai

Akamai Technologies Inc.'s fourth-quarter profit climbed 13 percent to surpass analyst estimates as more customers signed up for its Internet traffic-management services.

The Cambridge company said it earned $40.5 million during the quarter....

"Evergreen Solar swings to loss

Evergreen Solar Inc., a maker of thin polysilicon solar laminates, reported a bigger-than-expected fourth-quarter loss on a charge to write down the value of a closed factory and higher start-up costs at another.

I thought these were the NEW JOBS, the GREEN JOBS, that were going to save us all.

The loss was $52.1 million.... Evergreen shuttered its Marlborough plant and took a charge of $23.1 million to write down its value as the recession slowed new orders and reduced prices for solar power modules. The company is expanding capacity at a Devens plant that will produce up to 40 megawatts per quarter by yearend....

Charges hurt Millipore profit

Millipore Corp., a maker of membranes for sterilizing and filtering antibiotics and beverages, said its fourth-quarter profit fell 26 percent on lower revenue and a series of charges.

The Billerica company earned $33.3 million.... Millipore said its bioscience division helped offset a decline in revenue from its bioprocess division. For the full year, earnings were $145.8 million....

That doesn't sound like they are hurting much, huh?

Profit rises 15% at Skyworks Solutions

Chip maker Skyworks Solutions Inc. said its fiscal first-quarter profit climbed 15 percent, boosted by faster product launches and strong smart phone demand. For the three months ended Jan. 2, the Woburn company earned $22 million.... The latest quarter's results were boosted by a gain of about $2 million on the early retirement of convertible debt.

Converted to what?
