Few things say summer in New England more than a good book and a long, lazy weekend. Books transport us to far-off lands and interior explorations - and with a much lower carbon footprint. Here is a quirky list of recent books the editorial page enjoyed, even without benefit of a hammock.

Bergman writes that it was not his intention to depict this history as a series of Israeli failures "but that is largely the way it has turned out."

There is much for Boston Red Sox fans to savor in "The Yankee Years" by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci (Doubleday). While its publisher describes it as "the definitive story of a dynasty," it is actually the definitive story of how a dynasty became an ex-dynasty. The book documents a high level of dysfunction from top management to top players - and some terrible business decisions. The blow-by-blow on Game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series is painful reading. Still, according to the authors, Aaron Boone's home run marked "the last magical moment of the Torre Era." The Sox have dominated ever since. That's what we call a happy ending.

Parents objected to Sedaris’s “I Like Boys’’ because they don’t want their children learning about homosexuality in school (AP)."

LITCHFIELD – Schools Supt. Elaine F. Cutler is apologizing for the use of "inappropriate material in our schools" and said stories in a Campbell High School elective course will be immediately removed from the curriculum.
"Some of these stoires contained explicit, vulgar and gratuitous language and school administrators have determined that these stories are not appropriate for a high school curriculum," Cutler said in a statement to news media this afternoon.
Irate parents demanded last night that the school board and administrators take action over stories assigned in Campbell High School English classes that they found objectionable, including stories by authors Stephen King, David Sedaris and Ernest Hemingway.
The stories included Sedaris' "I Like Guys," which deals with homosexuality; "The Crack Cocaine Diet" by Laura Lippman, which includes explicit sexual material, rape, murder and drug use; a Hemingway short story that includes statutory rape and discussion about abortion; and a King story called "Survivor Type."
Around 25 parents and community members came to the school board meeting last night to voice their objections to the material.
Sue Ann Johnson, who first raised concerns after finding the stories in her son's backpack, said she met yesterday morning with Litchfield Superintendent Elaine Cutler and Campbell Principal Bob Manseau and said that they indicated the material would no longer be used in the classroom.

Johnson said she was told the stories were all part of a "Love/Gender/Family unit in the high school's English class.
This WHY our SCHOOLS SUCK and our kids are STOO-PID!!!!

She said she approached her son's English teacher, asking whether the subjects were an "appropriate topic for discussion in high school." The teacher wrote back that the stories were part of an approved textbook, and said she was following the approved curriculum for the class.
As Johnson quoted from the short story "The Crack Cocaine Diet," there were gasps from the assembled parents and, at times, from members of the school board. Several parents indicated that they did not want their children learning about homosexuality in public school, including state Rep. Laura Gandia, who lives in Litchfield.
"My children are being forced to accept homosexuality when this is something I don't agree with," said Gandia. "When did acceptance of homosexuality become part of my child's education?"
