Yeah, who is backing coups in Turkey again?

"Turkish military coup plot alleged; Police arrest 52 commanders" by Selcan Hacaoglu, Associated Press | February 23, 2010

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish police detained 52 military commanders yesterday for allegedly planning to blow up mosques in order to trigger a military takeover and overthrow the Islamic-rooted government.

Sort of their own Operation Northwoods, 'eh, world?

The nationwide sweep highlighted the ongoing struggle between the secular establishment and the Islamic-oriented government, and left many wondering if the military no longer called the shots in a nation accustomed to viewing it as the pillar of the secular state.

Turkey’s senior military leaders were once untouchable. Some were members of Turkey’s elite warrior class known as “pashas,’’ a title of respect harking back to Ottoman times.

But yesterday, the balance of power in this European Union candidate appeared to have undergone a major shift.

The detentions showed that the elected government is trying to take the upper hand against the military, which has ousted four governments since 1960 and held influence since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk created the secular republic from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.

Consider this concealed history:

"In the 1930's, the revolutionary secularist leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, invited many eminent Jewish professors to escape persecution in Germany and settle in Turkey, and during the war provided a safe passage for many to Palestine."

Now I finally understand the vague, obfuscating, and strangely censored articles about Turkey, Israel in the Zionist AmeriKan MSM.

"'Explosive' Sibel Edmonds Cover Story at 'The American Conservative'

There’s a new issue of The American Conservative going to press today, and it includes a story that will make more than a few congressmen and foreign lobbyists intensely uncomfortable: an in-depth interview between Phil Giraldi and FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds. She tells us exactly how Turkish intelligence have penetrated national secrets, suborned government officials, and blackmailed Congress. It’s going to be explosive.

(N.B. There are some notable interconnections between the Turkish lobby and AIPAC and the Israeli lobby /StingRay)

And the game was NUCLEAR SECRETS?

So Israel is playing both sides all over the place, huh?

With strong electoral backing and support from the European Union, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has curtailed military power and signaled further tough steps to rein in the generals. But yesterday’s detentions, which followed the gathering of wiretap evidence and the discovery of secret weapons caches, marks the highest-profile crackdown to date.

Police in simultaneous operations in eight cities detained 21 generals and admirals, including former deputy chief General Ergin Saygun, former Air Force chief General Ibrahim Firtina, and Navy Chief Admiral Ozden Ornek.

They are also accused of conspiring to plan shooting down a Turkish warplane to trigger armed conflict with Greece in a bid to destabilize the Turkish government. The military strongly denies the allegations.

Not the first time someone had that idea.

But 9/11 is what they say it is, right.

Erdogan declined to comment yesterday on the raids, saying they had been carried out on prosecutors’ orders. However on Sunday, Erdogan said his government had not given “a chance to those who tried to fly a course for Turkey outside the law.’’

A spokesman for the main opposition Republican People’s Party expressed concern over the detentions.

“These are grave incidents, severe incidents for society, for the Turkish armed forces,’’ Mustafa Ozyurek said. “Legally, and from a human rights perspective, there must be a speedy trial.’’

Erdogan denies the ongoing crackdown is politically motivated or designed to silence government critics.

"Turkey accuses 11 more of coup attempt" by Associated Press | February 26, 2010

ANKARA, Turkey - A Turkish court charged 11 more ranking officers today with allegedly plotting several years ago to topple the Islamic-rooted government, increasing the number of officers jailed to 31.

The 11 newly charged officers included two active-duty admirals and one retired general. The court’s decision was handed down hours after prosecutors released the former chiefs of the navy and air force and another top general without immediately charging them with being involved.

The government detained 49 high-ranking officers this week, accusing them of plotting to overthrow the government in 2003, a year after the ruling party came to power.

The investigation fueled tensions between Turkey’s two main political forces - the Islamic-based government and the fiercely secular military - worrying businesses and investors and jolting the markets.

Slight destabilization there, no?

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed opposition calls for early elections and met with the country’s military chief yesterday to defuse tensions over the government’s probe.

Opposition leaders contend the coup probe is tinged by politics, an allegation the government rejects. It says it is trying to put the military, which has ousted four civilian governments since 1960, under civilian rule, as in Western democracies.

The charges are largely based on wiretap evidence and the discovery of alleged plans for a military coup drafted in 2003. Some of the officers are accused of plotting to blow up mosques and kill some non-Muslim figures to foment chaos and trigger a military takeover.

It is widely believed that General Hilmi Ozkok, then head of the military, did not back his subordinates. He has not been implicated in the alleged plot.

Was he the whistle-blower?

Earlier yesterday, Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul held a rare, three-hour meeting with General Ilker Basbug, chief of the military.

“The public must be assured that matters will be handled in line with the law, and everyone should act responsibly not to damage institutions,’’ they later said in a statement.

"Earthquake in Turkey kills at least 51" by Associated Press | March 9, 2010

I didn't hear a HAARP, did you, readers?

OKCULAR, Turkey - Hundreds of earthquake survivors huddled in aid tents and around bonfires yesterday in eastern Turkey, seeking relief from the winter cold after a strong temblor knocked down stone and mud brick houses in five villages, killing 51 people.

The damage appeared worst in the Kurdish village of Okcular, which was almost razed.

When was the last time we even read about Kurds in the newspaper anyway.

The predawn earthquake caught many residents as they slept, shaking the area’s poorly made buildings into piles of rubble.

Panicked survivors fled into the narrow streets of this village perched on a hill in front of snow-covered mountains, with some people climbing out of windows to escape....

The Kandilli seismology center said the 6.0-magnitude quake hit at 4:32 a.m. near the village of Basyurt in a remote, sparsely populated area of Elazig Province.

The region is 340 miles east of Ankara, the capital. The US Geological Survey listed the quake at 5.9 magnitude.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kandilli Observatory’s director, Mustafa Erdik, urged residents not to enter any damaged homes, warning they could topple from aftershocks that Erdik said could last for days.

Sure have been a LOT of EARTHQUAKES LATELY, huh?

More than 100 aftershocks measuring up to 5.5 magnitude shook the region yesterday.

That get your mind off the coup, did it?
